About the choice of compiler, I have the MDK evaluation co-existing with my SILabs 8051 Keil tools. Just put each in their own installation directory. The SILabs Keil tools are full and free while the MDK eval is free, but 32k limited. HOWEVER, there are FREE Keil installations for STM32 F0, G0 and L0 as well as the Nuvoton chips. I don't know which way I'm going hardware-wise yet, but I will try out the STMCubeIDE thing at a later time and will probably use a book for that too (if there is one?).
This book is well supported by presentations, labs, exercises and a whole lot more on the book's companion website. In my exercises with the Canaduino Blue Pill and ST-LINK v2 everything has gone according to plan. Highly recommended.
Just be aware & don't be fooled, if you purchase the printed book, you will be sent a Black & White version, not the color illustrated one that is advertised. This should not be allowed, or at least a disclaimer should be stated that you cannot purchase a version with color illustrations.
I have to admit I feel a bit ripped off, it's not what was advertised, and not what I ordered.
Hint: To get the app, you have to order it.
Insane! This is my first and last purchase of any digital "content" from Amazon.

After the first introduction the author describes the different peripheral components of the STM32F103 in a manner that even newbies can get a quite good understanding of how the ARM microcontrollers work in general (pictures and circuit drawings support you hereby). Every chapter you are learning about some new features and at the end of each chapter there are some example codes on how to use the considered peripheral.
There are no advanced code-sections here which use a lot of fancy expressions. Rather this is a good introduction that you learn the basics on which you can build your own applications.
After I looked quite for some time for a introduction to the STM32F103 and tried also some other books as well I can say that in my opinion this is the best beginner book so far.
When you have a basic understanding also check out the STM32 documentation which is really also written very understandable and very detailed.
Grazie.
