Then I slowly re-read Stranded, savoring each word. What a depth I had missed on my first read. Embedded in the adventure was the sovereign God using adversity to mold the lives of His people. The symbolism, most of which I missed my first-time through, was a rich blessing. The truth of the book’s epitaph, Isaiah 40:21-22, comes alive in this great adventure.
I heartily recommend this book. If you’re as eager as I was to follow the action, hurry on through to the exciting climax, but don’t deprive yourself of the riches that will come with a second more thoughtful read.
I'll just add that it was truly "heart-pounding storytelling" ( to quote the blurb above), and kept me up far too late, several nights in a row. I love a book that has me turning pages furiously, reading en route to the bathroom, and while boiling water for tea, and even while brushing my teeth!
Add to that me actually yelling out loud at one point, (around 3 a.m.) "I am getting so SICK of that girl! When will she learn that he....." (no spoilers from me). I was actually stamping my foot on the mattress to emphasize my frustration at her! When you want to wring a character's neck to wake her up to her folly, that's good readin', folks.
The writing was such that, while keeping me reading voraciously to see how the latest terrifying situation would be handled, there were also a couple of times when tears suddenly burst out of me! Very poignant moments, and they truly brought the deeper message of the book home in a most satisfying way.
Like so many others, I'm anxiously awaiting the next one from this talented duo of authors.
One of the main themes in the book was the role of fathers, physical and spiritual, and how their presence, absence, or performance can either leave us well-equipped for life and a relationship with God, or leave us emotionally and spiritually starving. As a fatherless daughter, I can attest that the authors wrote on this subject with compete authenticity.
Beyond that, I was delighted with the writing style and imagery, and was impressed by the survival knowledge, which no doubt Don had from personal experience as a Vietnam veteran. The characters were authentic - even the villains. I'd be hard-pressed to pick a favorite. (Perhaps the Lone Soldier? Haha.) Debut authors frequently struggle with their sense of timing, but I think Don and Stephanie dwelt on all the best parts.
If I were stranded on an island, this is the book I'd want to have with me. Fortunately, I was merely stranded on my sofa until I reached "The End."
The authors are talented, and their writing style is stellar. This book would be a perfect fit for a reader who likes lots of intricate detail in each scene.
