Product Description

The album that started it all for everyone's favorite Midwestern surf band, complete with original pix, vintage liners and four bonus tracks unavailable anywhere else!

Amazon.com

Although there's no shortage of Trashmen records out there (a 4 CD box set, a live album, outtakes), and none of it's waste product, this expanded version of the Minnesota surf gonzos' 1964 debut (and only contemporary) album is the best way to find out if their trash is worth your cash. The song they're famous for, "Surfin' Bird," is a frat/surf novelty classic that makes "Louie Louie" sound like "Go Away Little Girl." Two West Coast R&B novelties by the Rivingtons, "Papa Oo Mow Mow Mow" and "The Bird's the Word," are knitted together by a pulsing Midwest surf beat, with a harsh monotone vocal giving way at strategic moments to some of the most graphic sounds of regurgitation ever recorded.

If this sounds appealing (and there's no earthly reason it shouldn't), there are more delights within, although only "Bird Bath" attempts (unsuccessfully) to match the hit. You get some nicely executed surf instrumentals, slightly surf-inflected covers of "It's So Easy" and "Money," and some especially commissioned (from a friend of the band) surf and hotrod songs crammed full of period jargon. Bonus tracks include a demo of "Surfin' Bird"'s too-close-for-comfort followup, "Bird Dance Beat," and a sweetly goofy Christmas single that has Santa and his reindeer doing the Watusi with Peggy Sue, Short Fat Fannie, and other regular partygoers of the era. --Ken Barnes

The Trashmen will never be able to let down the song Surfin' Bird(and most folks know the song but don't know the group that sings it), and will be forever associated with that song, but the rest of their work shouldn't be ignored. Thanks to the good folks at Sundazed and curious old school surf rock fans like myself, they won't be totally forgotten. Surfin' Bird is a great piece of early 60s rock. The Trashmen are lumped into the surf rock category, which they do belong in, but alot of these songs are vocal tunes. Only a very few instrumental surf songs to be found here, but don't let that discourage you. The vocal tunes take a little warming up to, but you'll find your happyass singing along with them in no time. Great stuff from a great time in rock and roll history when lyrics were just about good clean wholesome fun. And if you dig this stuff, these guys got a big ol' boxset available. Dig!

In a day when quality products from the music industry are few and far between, this 1999 reissue of The Trashmen's debut album is a ray of sunshine. The record was produced on heavy-weight vinyl (187 grams on my postal scale) and is clear as a bell. The label and description do not indicate the weight of the platter, but that is in audiophile territory, helps preserve the sound quality, and prevent warps over time. For those who like to listen to music on records, not some compressed digital version, this one is a must have. On a mid-level turntable or above, the sound is magnificent. There is no audible surface noise, and the detail of the sound is on a par with 1960s releases before records were thinned up by the manufacturers in the 1970s to save money, at the cost of sound quality and durability of the record itself. I've had half-speed masters that don't sound this good.

The label on this Sundazed reissue indicates that the original masters were used to create this pressing, so what you get is sonically true to a 1964 original, not some modern remastered hybrid that the musicians never intended. It is even still in mono, and has not been remastered into stereo. About the only thing inaccurate about the description by Amazon is the track listing, which is probably from the CD version. The actual track listing follows that of the original album. Side 1: Surfin' Bird, King of the Surf, Henrietta, Miserlou, Malaguena, It's So Easy, Break-Up, Church Key; Side 2: Tube City, My Woodie, Bird Bath, Kuk, Money, Sleeper, Walk Don't Run, and Raw-Hide. I feel I got my money's worth with this album, and then some. Pick up a copy and play it repeatedly until your talking dog and megalomaniacal baby destroy your copy and buy all others in town. Amazon will ship you another.

Whenever you're in a bad mood, just play this record, esp the surfin bird song, and all you're problems will disappear. Also, if you haven't heard, its fun to make bird puns before you play this record. Like if you're friends ask you what you're about to play, you'll know what to say. hahaha. Love this record!

I graduated from high school in 1963. The Trashmen were a local band here in Minneapolis and Surfin Bird was " the word". I owned a copy of the album back then. Over the years it was lost and now I can listen to it again on dvd. A great album !!!!!!!

Always loved the title song. The Trashmen really did some good stuff "Back in the Day". Surfin' Bird is still rockin' good fun, especially if you've had a few, if you know what I mean.
