Perfect replacement

I ordered these to replace to tired pistons on the hatch of my truck topper. I matched model numbers, and they were a perfect replacement. These are much stiffer than the old ones. The problem I was having was that the old pistons would let the hatch drop unexpectedly in cold weather. It's summer now, but I don't expect to be hitting my head anymore this winter.

INSTALLATION NOTE:
These came with no instructions, so had to figure it out. Basically, its a ball and socket joint. You don't have to remove the metal clips, which I did on the first set. Just pull straight out on the old piston to remove them. This will expose the ball on the mounting bracket. Then, just push the new piston until it snaps in place. It should take no tools and 5 minutes to replace a set.

The item I received is as advertised. My strut units had "Made in USA" on them. Also marked with 28lbs ea unit. These easily replaced the 40lb per unit struts that were in. Installation was complete in under two minutes, mind you, my mounting hardware was already in place. These units have retention clips at each end, a narrow flat blade screw driver (I believe one reviewer already mentioned this) fits in behind the back of the clip, you'll see the flat spot on the head where you'll pry. You won't have to pry very much, just enough to open the jaws of the clip, then snap it on to the ball of the mounting hardware. Having an extra hand would be beneficial, but if no one else is around, a person that's resourceful can handle the job easily! I was actually surprised at the force of these units, I had to be aggressive to close the camper lid.

It's Good Not to Get Hit on the Head

These are used on the tailgate window of my truck cap.

The new ones not only hold the window up, but will raise it all the way up from a horizontal position (where the load is a maximum).

Replacement was very easy: Just use a 1/4" straight-blade screwdriver to remove the old clips from each end, and pull the gas spring off.

The new one snaps on without any tools.

The end sockets have a drop of grease in them, so you don't have to add any.

I sprayed the rods with WD-40, to help keep the seals from wearing.

I did one side at a time, so I didn't have to hold the whole weight of the window with my head. Yes, I could have used a prop rod, but I decided to use my head instead. :-)

Happy with the results.

I bought this to replace the struts on my F150 camper shell. The camper shell has a glass door that lifts up. It has been a number of years since the old struts have been in service. They needed replacing a few seasons ago. I knew to measure the extended length (from center of ball mounts) and the retracted length (center of ball mounts). I wasn't sure how to figure out the pounds of force. After surfing the net, I realized it depends on your application (yes, I already knew that). There were no part numbers on the old ones that helped. So I took a chance on these 28 lbs of force. I ordered these struts and they arrived with in a few days. When I installed them it around 30 degrees, a cold daytime temperature for the southeast. Installation was quick and straight forward. Just place a small screw driver under the metal clip a lightly pry it back. Place over ball mount and push toward ball. Remove screw driver and wiggle ball mount till it the clip locks into place. Each mount takes a few seconds to install. Note: most manufactures suggest installing struts with the gas cylinder on top (thicker end). Anyway they work great! The 28 lbs of force is more than enough. If your camper shell struts need replacing, this is a great choice.

A Necessity for Truck Add-on Cap

These are the OEM rods for certain models of "bed caps" on trucks. They look identical to hood support rods, but they are usually not compatible. I bought these for my friend's truck, whose rear window did not stay open because the original rods aged and once it hit in the head in the friend's wife. My friend was using a 2x4 wood to support the window, but since these rods are not expensive, I bought them for my friend.

Removal/installation is easy since they are held in place with a tension clip on each end. Just pry it out with a flat blade screwdriver but make sure it does not fly away into the black hole or worse yet, in your eyes. Installation: simply place the clip on top of the end and press hard on it; the same caution for removal procedure applies, however.

New window struts, a true headache saver...

I recently purchased a used truck topper that had seen some better years. The existing struts did not lift the rear window from the closed position into an open position. I had to hold the window up in a full open position for the struts to hold the window up without it closing, I mean slamming closed, again. The final straw for me came when I didn't open the window into a full open position and the double-check that the struts were holding it open. I leaned into the open window, and it crashed down onto the back of my head, driving my chin into the tailgate. It wasn't fun, I think I actually broke a piece of my chin off... I'm just glad the window didn't brake or it knock me out. Anyway, I replaced the old worn out struts with these direct part replacements, and I don't know why I didn't do it sooner. Just one of these new struts opens and holds the window, where the 2 before couldn't. They were a breeze to install, a little grease in the ends and a push to seat the ball in the socket. 2-minutes of install and it's all fixed. Could have saved myself a broken chin!!
