To give you some context, I own a large pair of Polk RTI A9 tower speakers for music listening, which are ported but magically have tight bass and are free of the irritating chuffing port noise. I love the open, airy, accurate sound stage these speakers create. They are a dream to hear and match my sound preferences nearly perfectly. Only the deepest rumble of the sub 30Hz audio was missing from these amazing speakers. Unfortunately, Polk's subs aren't as well engineered as their speakers to my ears. They suffer from both of my pet peeves. While listening to the Polk subwoofers, I obsess over the booming and chuffing which keeps me from enjoying the music. As a result, I spent a long time researching other subwoofers before I bought one. I was zealously determined to avoid ported enclosures if possible.
In my research, I saw SVS mentioned quite often as the best sealed enclosure subs. At the time, I believe this SB12-NSD was listed for $599. After a little more research, and making the decision to buy one, I checked the price here on Amazon. It was listed at $399!! The reason? A newer model with 100 more watts was coming. I admit I was already sold on it at $599 but the price drop removed all doubt. Ordered one and waited.
The moment it arrived, I opened and installed it. I set my Denon to send everything below 60Hz to this gem. Then, I sat in my recliner, queued up my favorite music, and pressed play. When it started to play, my jaw dropped. I then spent the next few hours alternating between an ear to ear grin and goosebumps. There were parts of many of my favorite recordings that were so low in frequency, I had basically never heard them before. The bass was incredibly tight, yet extended to the bottom depths of my ability to hear. In fact, even frequencies below 20Hz seemed to be creating sensations throughout my skeletal system. Of course, I had to verify what I was hearing and feeling with a signal generator. Bottom line? It was true. This single speaker was producing useful sound levels down to below 15Hz. Granted, part of that was due to the smallish room and good placement, but wow! Best of all, the bass from this SVS was even tighter than my Polk towers. No boom at all. No chuffing (no port.) Just perfect, clean, low frequency sound. This subwoofer made my Polk towers sound even better, which I didn't believe was possible. This sub has to be the deal of the century. You will not find better sound from a sub for less than $2k from my research. In fact, I'd say the sound quality of this sub is probably only second to the top of the line subs from the same company. Great job SVS!! For fans of super tight bass, you are going to fall in love with this sub. Just buy it. Wow.
Earlier this year, my home suffered a devastating power surge (not lightning). I lost various electronic devices throughout my house, including every single power strip, except for the one powering my recording studio. Let's just say that I bought a few more Furmans! Anyway, I was upset when I learned that my Yamaha receiver died. I spent weeks trying to fix it. I bought a new fuse and capacitor for the power board and soldered in the cap, but still couldn't get the thing going, so I eventually bought a newer receiver.
When I plugged in the new receiver, I was relieved when I heard music emanate from the 5 Chane speakers. However, I was dismayed to not hear anything from this SVS sub. Next to the power cord input is a fuse (T4AL250V) which is super easy to pull out - no tools necessary. I ordered a new one, plugged it in, and this bad boy works fantastically again.
Essentially, SVS designed a robust amplifier with serviceability in mind. This is the easiest repair I have ever done to a piece of electronic equipment. Five stars for the sound and toughness!
