I have a confession to make... SWEET ON YOU is my version of a Hollywood movie remake! Let me explain...
This story (the plot) is the same basic story of my second romance sale, which was published in print in 1999 as a Kensington Precious Gem, romances available only at Wal-Mart Stores.
I still remember the day it sold. I had pitched the idea to then Kensington editor Hilary Sares, even though I hadn't even written it yet. I figured, well, it would take her a while to get back to me! Not smart. Because she called in a few days and left me a message saying she wanted to buy my manuscript! Hurry...hurry...type...type...type...
Later, when my rights were returned to me, I resold the same manuscript to Thorndike Large Print and it was reprinted in hardcover, published in 2006. So, this self-pubbed version is #3. I love this story, so when I decided to give it yet another life, the first thing I did was re-read it. What I discovered was that the story needed a remake! So, I revised pretty much every page...
I also kept the time period of 2001. One reason is because of the "cute meet" of the hero and heroine, which happens via the toll booths on the Coronado bridge. As I fact-checked during the revision process, I learned the tolls were discontinued on June 27, 2002.
So, rather than figure out a new way for these two to meet, I decided to retain the original time period. While you were reading, you may have noticed a retro feel--no GPS, no Bluetooth, still using things like answering machines, no "digital" this or that, and not as much computer stuff, etc.
With the time period solidly in 2001, I found I didn't "have" to modernize so much!
The other thing I realized during this process was, well, that I am a better writer now. The style when I first wrote this story was what is called "head-hopping" point of view (where the reader is in and out of each character's head, even on the same page--even, sometimes, in the same paragraph!).
I no longer write in that style, so I knew I would need to do a heavy, page-by-page revision. The end result is a story that is the same as the original SWEET ON YOU, but so much better! I fell in love all over again with these characters and their lessons learned and their journeys to become the people they were meant to be.
About the Author
I feel like I have been a writer all my life--as cliché as that sounds, even to me!--from childhood essays that ended up in the Sunday School bulletin, to long-ago burned journals (I hate that I did that!), to love-sick poems written on napkins while having a glass or three of wine, to newsletters and articles and press releases written on-the-job, and finally to happily-ever-after romances that I love love love writing! As an award-winning author of four print-published novels via traditional publishers, I have now happily embraced the ebook revolution and am delighted to be on the indie path. I'm tellin' ya, the freedom is exhilarating!
So, what makes me different than the scads of other romance writers? I think my romances offer a little "something extra"--whether it's really interesting secondary characters with their own arching subplots, unique and detailed settings, or research that translates into unexpected facts sprinkled in. Whatever it is, my stories do seem to translate into something even first time romance readers enjoy! Nothing makes me happier than to hear from a reader or read a review by a reader who was surprised by how much the story touched her.
And, do realize that your reviews on Amazon are GOLDEN to indie authors, so do leave a sentence or two after you've read an ebook!
