Most, if not all, vehicles are equipped with Long Life 9007 bulbs from the factory. Long Life usually means the bulbs were designed with filaments and gas mixtures designed to extend the duration at which the light output remains usable, up to approximately 800-1300 hours in a laboratory environment. This is in comparison to 2500-5000 hours from HID capsules (D1/D2/D3/D4) which cost $100-$250 per capsule to replace. In addition, white LED headlights/foglights last approximately 25,000 to 50,000 hours.

Sylvania does not keep it a secret that their SilverStar and SilverStar Ultra line of headlights are not designed for longevity. According to Sylvania for their 9007s, their SilverStar lasts 150 hours, the SilverStar Ultra lasts 200 hours, while the XtraVision lasts 375 hours. The 9008/H13 standard bulb can go up to 1000 hours, while the Sylvania SilverStar 9008/H13 is rated at only 325 hours and the 9008/H13 XtraVision is rated for 500 hours.

In the SilverStars, the gas mixture and filaments were designed to compensate for the loss of light transmission from the filter (tint) on the bulb glass. The SilverStars are essentially "ricer" bulbs designed to make the color temperature appear near 4000K (HID white) but this costs you lifespan.

From experience, the XtraVisions will last at least 3-4 years of normal use (about 30 minutes every workday). Daytime Running Lights and automatic headlights SEVERELY reduce bulb lifespan because they keep the bulbs running at full voltage whenever you use the car contrary to popular belief. In addition, headlight bulbs are rated at 12.8 VDC, which means that the rated hours were obtained from testing at 12.8 VDC. Running the bulbs at a higher voltage, like the 14.

These bulbs are slightly brighter than the factory equipped Sylvania Standard H13s.

White ricer bulbs like the tinted SilverStars tend to fool the human eye into thinking that the whiter light is brighter (especially in a dark environment like an unlit highway) while in reality the yellower lights tend to get picked up more readily by the human eye and are brighter.

I purchased these bulbs for my 2002 Saab 9-3, in May 2010, and in only 7 months, by the end of January, 2011, both bulbs burned out, about one week apart. While I did appreciate the somewhat better visibility, the life span is much too short, and totally unacceptable for an auto headlight! I actually re-installed the used OE-standard bulbs that are over two years old, and still work.
Not gonna buy XtraVision again.

I purchased a two-pack for replacement in my 2005 Honda Pilot on 8 August (at Wal-Mart) ($19.82). I installed as per directions (I have done this before). First light failed (i.e., "burnt out" low-beam) by Thanksgiving. Thought it might be a fluke that evaded QA. Lo and behold the second did exactly the same on 18 December. That's 3.5 months on one and 4.5 months on the other (being generous). The much vaunted extra brightness, downroad, and side road performance was nominal at best. Save your money and go with standard bulbs unless you drive through nature preserves at night at high speeds. These are JUNK!

I have used these on 3 different cars over the years and will continue to do so. I like that they do not stress the factory wiring nor need any changes to the headlight housings.

According to the packaging they only last about 1/2 last as long as the stock headlight bulbs. Well I guess I do not drive that much at night as I have yet to wear out a set.

I do know that I have replaced factory bulbs that were still working after 10 years with these due to the fact that even thought they still worked that they were noticeably dim.

FYI All headlight bulbs become dimmer due to usage as they age. So if you have old / original bulbs and want a brighter bulb that gives you more distance to the front and sides without spending a lot of money buy a set of these. They may not last as many years as the factory ones yet the light pattern is much better and these will last several times as long as some of the other bulbs like the "Silver Stars" and similar bulbs. Also these are "legal" to use. While some of the other bulbs out there are not "legal" and may damage your wiring and headlight housings.

If you really wish to make a serious "legal" improvement to your headlights. I would recommend upgrading to a relay headlight harness and a set of these bulbs.

Thank you.
