Saban's Power Rangers Original Graphic Novel: The Psycho Path (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) Paperback – October 15, 2019

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 464 ratings

An original graphic novel set in the world of Saban's Power Rangers.

Created by Karone when she was still the evil Astronema, the Psycho Rangers were programmed with overwhelming hate for all things Power Rangers. They were defeated at great personal cost by the Galaxy Rangers, but now someone has brought them back and they are more murderous than ever before.

Who brought them back, and why? And can Lost Galaxy Pink Ranger Karone and her brother Red In Space Ranger Andros stop them before they bring the universe to its knees?

From writer Paul Allor (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Clue) and the fan-favorite artist of Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon Giuseppe Cafaro (Suicide Squad, Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon)!

I'm really loving what Boom Comics has been doing with Power Rangers. It's not the cheesy TV show I grew up with. They've aged the ranger like I've age or at least have given them real or adult like situations to deal with. Great examples would be death, and leadership, betrayal, losing one's self and then finding one's self. Really great comics. I highly recommend a read!

Power Rangers fans have to ask: do you think Junki Takegami and Judd Lynn had any idea how popular the Neziranger* would be when Junki created them and Judd adapted them for Power Rangers in Space as the Psycho Rangers? I'm willing to bet not but here we are. After only appearing in 10 episodes across 2 series, they are some of Power Rangers' best known and loved villains (and bonus points for doing so despite never appearing in the original and nostalgia favorite Mighty Morphin Power Rangers). So much so that, in the Ranger fandom, there was excitement when Psycho Green was introduced in issue 20 of the main comic series and when his and the other Psycho Rangers were confirmed to appear in this original graphic novel. So how did it stack up? Well, I did not title my article sarcastically :)

I absolutely loved this book. Some parts were a little rushed in parts but it was a unique story that did a great job exploring the Psycho Rangers and Karone. It draws parallels between how Karone was redeemed and her attempts to reform the Psycho Rangers while needing to convince the Space Rangers that they can be saved. It's a fairly powerful and deep story, at least by Power Rangers standards. I love Boom Comics' output for how they go under the surface and explore how being Rangers affects them psychologically and The Psycho Path delivers, although there's some good action because, of course, it's Power Rangers. The ending straddles comfortably between ending things well enough as a stand-alone while also having everything set up for a sequel (which I'm hoping for :) )

It's a sort of sequel to both issue 20 of the MMPR series (conveniently included with issues 17-19 in MMPR Volume 5) and "The Trial of Astronema" from the Power Rangers 25th Anniversary Special (included in MMPR Lost Chronicles Vol. 2 with the 2018 Annual) but you don't need to have read them to enjoy this book. It just makes it more entertaining. You also don't need to have read "Psychotic", the exclusive story from the now out-of-print MMPR Year 2 Hardcover collection...

I'm sorry, I meant "FORMERLY" exclusive story from the now out-of-print MMPR Year 2 Hardcover collection, because the story is included at the end of this graphic novel. For those who already have the Year 2 hardcover, I'm sorry you have to rebuy this short story but for those who didn't buy Year 2 because they already got volumes 4-6, this is a welcome reprint. I figured "Psychotic" would be here after the Year 1 exclusive story was reprinted in Lost Chronicles vol 2 but it's nice to confirm it. It gives Psycho Green's origin that fits with the character as seen in The Psycho Path and is just a nice addition, especially for fans buying the paperbacks/digital editions.

Even without including "Psychotic", this is a must buy for anyone diligently collecting Boom's Power Rangers comics (be it paperback, digital, hardcovers, issues, or every darn release). This is definitely the best story from them yet and arguably the best Power Ranger story ever, TV, movie, or otherwise. Highly recommended.

Paul Allor’s “Power Rangers: The Psycho Path” features art by Guiseppe Cafaro, colors by Marcelo Costa, and letters by Ed Dukeshire. The story picks up some time after the events of “Power Rangers in Space” and “Power Rangers Lost Galaxy,” with the Green Psycho Ranger escaping from the Moon where the 1969 Power Rangers buried him during the events of “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” no. 20. He gathers the other Psycho Rangers and seeks out Astronema, who continues working to reform from the life she led while under Ecliptor’s brainwashing in the service of Dark Specter. She sought to find her identity as Karone and even joined the Galaxy Rangers at one point, though this story picks up after she gave up being the Pink Galaxy Ranger. She once again lives as Karone on KO-35, the planet she and Andros, the Red Space Ranger, originally called home. Though Astronema did not create Psycho Green, he considers Karone and he siblings as they were both once in the service of Dark Specter. Karone, meanwhile, has learned that she and Astronema are merely two facets of the same person. She was not necessarily the result of Ecliptor’s brainwashing, but just a part of Karone. That blending allows her to negotiate a different path. While Psycho Green wants to rebuild Dark Specter’s empire, Karone/Astronema works to help the other Psycho Rangers discover identities separate from blunt killing machines in service to another.

Allor’s graphic novel works much like Brenden Fletcher’s “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink” or Kyle Higgins’s “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon,” in that it offers an epilogue for fan-favorite characters, but with writing fitting the more mature tone of Boom! Studios’ “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” comics. Those who watched “Power Rangers in Space” or “Power Rangers Lost Galaxy” between 1998-2000 will find this a fitting extension of those storylines, particularly as it continues both series’ habit of complicating the black-and-white morality of earlier “Power Rangers” seasons. For that alone, Allor’s work is particularly fitting as the fourth “Power Rangers” graphic novel (following the two previously mentioned and Ryan Parrott & Lucas Werneck’s “Power Rangers: Aftershock”). As a bonus, this volume reprints “Psychotic” from “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” no. 20, written by Trey Moore with art by French Carlomagno, introducing Trek, the Green Supersonic Ranger who betrayed his team to become Psycho Green.

Godibile in ogni caso.

Without much spoilers, this is a great revival for the psycho rangers and is very much about those guys, not the In Space Rangers. A must read if you were into the Psycho Rangers or Power Rangers in general.
