If you need to put a IDE drive in a case this one is probably the best bang for your buck. A lot of other ones are so pricey you might as well buy a 1Tb external HDD.
I have a number of these. They do what they're supposed to, and the case is clean, elegant, simple, small, flat on all six sides, and tool-less. I love them. Some reviewers complain about the tight internal space but I'm in my seventies, my hands shake, I'm legally blind, and I have no trouble assembling them. And that's with modern SATA drives (no legacy power connector) - the tightest configuration. The only con I can think of is the instructions, which are worse than useless because you might be tempted to waste time looking for some useful information in the tiny print. In any case, assembly is obvious.
Reliability is hard to judge - I haven't had a failure, and mine are mostly past the infant mortality stage.
And they throw in two gold knobs for those who care...
These enclosures do share a universal flaw with every other similar enclosure I have: a poorly implemented power/activity LED. In this case the LED lights if the power is on, unless the eSATA connection is present, in which case it doesn't. There is no activity indication. I'm using XP3, with the built-in drivers. Over the years I've acquired only one enclosure where the LED behaves rationally and, in that one, lonely, case, it's too dim to see. C'est la vie.
I've tried out both an SATA and an IDE drive in this case, and both fit without a problem. You may need to push the unused connection out of the way, but I had no problems closing the case with either drive. The holes to bolt the drive in place were in the correct location for both drives.
The case is easy to open and close, and even came with a matching screwdriver for the included screws (I can tell you for a fact that this isn't standard practice with cases)
No, it doesn't have an internal fan, but many cases don't (most, actually) and you're unlikely to find one at a low price.
This case is probably more than sufficient for the average user. Heavy users who will be accessing their external drives constantly or who work in hot environments may want to look into a case that's specially geared towards cooling.
Edit: I have to add a caveat in after using two of these cases. The power cords are not well made. I had one die on me after a relatively short time. The case still works perfectly, but really, what good is a case without a power cord? You may have to buy a new one or get a warranty replacement.
This enclosure comes with all the cables necessary to either put an IDE or SATA 3.5" HDD into the housing and also comes with a USB and eSATA cable to connect the case with the computer!
Installation is very easy, no tools necessary. and of course you have to be careful with the connectors, the PCB and all but that is true for every installation you perform on your computer!
A great product for a good price!
