Weirdly, I happened on what I think might be a solution: I plugged the headphone jack all the way in the USB adapter BEFORE putting the adapter in the computer. I heard a crackling sound. Then I put it in the PC and now I'm getting stereo when the jack is pushed in fully.
Note this product isn't returnable (it is not stated when checking out and it really should be -- please fix this Amazon).
Anyway, I bought the Sennheiser PCV 05 Combo Audio Adapter from Amazon (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IM36VU0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and when plugged in on macOS there was a HUGE world of difference and sounded fantastic. Everything worked including the microphone. When I rebooted into Windows 10, headset sounded awesome, but Windows 10 would not recognize the microphone and had generic recognition of the headset altogether. I had to use Mac computer built-in mic to talk to people. I called up Sennheiser directly. They explained that the wiring on Mac and PC's are different, and even though the Windows 10 is on a Mac, it still sees devices differently than Mac. They sent me out their brand USB adaptor for free since I already bought their headset and another adaptor of their brand.
I received it today, and I am blown away from the difference. It flawlessly works on both macOS and Windows 10. I had to lower headset volume and microphone volume input because it was so loud. So there is no excuse for Sabrent USB Adaptor not to work. I called Amazon and was refunded the money since Sabrent has a no return policy.
Pay a little more and by the brand instead. Not sure if the good reviews are bought or from the previous product design, but again DON'T BUY to save money. It's not worth it.
I never leave reviews like that.. but this one definitely deserves it. It seems that it isn't just mine that has the issue as many people in the reviews are stating it has the same issue on theirs.
The microphone input may as well not even exist because it doesn't work. You have to yell into the mic to get any audio through and when you do it's extremely distorted and low volume. The distortion, based on the sounds, is clearly due to the unit being designed incorrectly and has nothing to do with the yelling itself.
It's unbelievable that people are rating this higher since it doesn't do the only thing it was designed to do -- turn your mic and headphones into a USB connection via adapter.
Now, because of this thing (and my front panel audio being scratchy and the headset cord being too short) I have to return a headset and buy another for work.

I use "pulse audio" so scripting the volume from a command file is accomplished this way:
$ pactl set-sink-volume 9 -5% # lowers volume by 5%, also accepts +10%, 20db, 50%, or multiplier e.g. 1.1 .
The 9 was obtained by typing "pactl list" and searching for "USB Audio Device". In my case, it was listed as "Sink #9".
The audio quality is "good", but you may find better. Some of the reviews also complain about low microphone input. Haven't tried. Perfect for me.

Keine Kaufempfehlung, 0 Sterne.

No nonsense involving psychoacoustic "3D surround sound" nonsense, no bullshit features or unnecessary design - this is a simple 2x2 USB audio interface, and it's very well engineered.
Its small profile means you can use it almost anywhere without blocking other USB ports. It can be a snug fit sometimes to connect a USB cable in an adjacent port, as the width of the black part is on the edge of acceptable, but you can make it work.
I use one of these on my main PC. Despite it having a premium Asus gaming motherboard, its onboard sound chipset - and the poor circuit design -
causes loads of EM interfaces. £6.99 later, a Sabrent gives me excellent quality sound output almost indistinguishable from a much more expensive audio interface I use for music production. I also use a Sabrent on my work laptop and again, It Just Works. Inarguably useful.
They're not indestructible, but they are very well made. Recently, someone managed to BEND one of mine by dragging a heavy table past my PC, and the table leg snagged against the Sabrent plugged into it. Remarkably, despite now looking quite broken, both headphone and microphone still worked. (I've since retired the broken adapter to the WEEE skip in the sky).
If you use a ModMic, or a headset mic with a powered capsule, buy one of these. Antlion Audio manufacture their own branded equivalent of these, but it's vastly more expensive and frankly, probably identical in quality.
I bought this to work with the Neewer NW-700 . I bought that a few days ago and had it plugged into a 2009 iMac. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t pick up decent sound volume from the microphone when it was plugged into the headphone jack or into the line in jack.
• The description details how its driverless requiring no extra software.
• It was also listed as often bought with the NW-700.
• Finally it lists as working with Mac so I thought I would take a punt and try it.
Disclaimer:
I don’t know what I’m doing, I really don’t! Hopefully if you don’t know what you’re doing either, then this review helps!
Packaging:
As in the pictures, a very simple package with some instructions, a thick foam mount to hold the adapter in and thats about it.
First Impressions:
There really isn't much to it. It seems well made, with no obvious marks, scratches or weaknesses. Overall it looks nicely designed and well thought out with the different colours providing clear indication of what each port is.
Use:
The instructions cover it but it really is simple, plug in and then attach either microphone, headphones or both into their respective ports. It was picked up by the Mac instantly and since plugging it in, I have a decent sound input and the NW-700 works brilliant. The last photo shows it appearing as a USB audio device. I still sound like an idiot though unforetunately!
Longevity: Its a USB plug, and its going to be left in for a while. It shouldn't fail and I'd be quite annoyed if it did. However, if it does fail in a short period then it also has the option to register for a 2 year warranty. I've done this just to make sure. If it does fail, as always I will update this review.
Cheers,

Two words, IT WORKS! Actually, it works FLAWLESSLY. My line out from the mixer goes straight to the mic/line in on this USB adapter. Can't fault the audio quality, even if you use inexpensive mics. Installation was easy. It was simply PLUG & PLAY. I didn't really need to download drivers or software. I was up and running in no time.
I needed a way to connect my mixer to my iMac. This made it possible and it did it affordably. Would I buy this again? Yes. Would I recommend it? DEFINITELY. No need for expensive USB interfaces. Just this. If already have a mixer; THEN, EVEN BETTER. Received it the following day too!
