This is a great product for when you need fast (but not constant) access to a variety of different SATA hard drives in which putting them in a permanent fixture would be kind of a pain due to constant swapping. This is a TRUE plug-and-play device, and it plays nice with multiple operating systems. With a USB 3 interface, this enclosure maintains high-sustained read/write speeds, which means less waiting for your data to copy over. However, this is NOT a good permanent drive for most Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) due to the sustained temperatures that can be generated, and the lack of active cooling devices.
----------

TERMS
I will use a few abbreviations here...
--HDD - Hard Disk Drive - that is, a hard drive that has a disk that physically spins rapidly, usually between 4,200-7,500 RPM
--SSD - Solid State Drive - that is, a hard drive that uses flash memory like that used on USB flash drive (i.e., no moving parts)
--SATA - Serial ATA - that is, the interface used to connect a hard drive to the computer internally or an enclosure externally
--USB - Universal Serial Bus - the port used to connect this external drive to your computer & the most common computer port used today (there are three different generations: 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, each which offer increasingly faster data transfer speeds)
-----------------------

EASE OF USAGE & ACCESSIBILITY
This enclosure accepts both 3.5 inch and 2.5 inch hard drives, provided the drive uses a SATA interface (ex: if the hard drive uses IDE/PATA or SAS, it will not fit the SATA port on this enclosure.) Usage of this enclosure is simple.

Color: One Bay (Lay-Flat) with Built-in Cooling Fan Verified Purchase
UPDATE (24 November 2015)

I removed the grills (a bit of a chore, the main case screws are under the rubber feet, so you have to remove those rubber feet first) and, lo and behold I was correct, the fan moves much more air, much more freely than with the grills. Without the grills you just have to be careful that the unit is placed on a level surface so nothing stops the fan from spinning, and make sure that you don't stick your fingers in the moving fan (but it's a low-power fan, so even if you did, it wouldn't take part of a finger off or anything). With a 3.5 or 2.5 hard drive in the unit, it will not prevent the fan from spinning either, so there is no problem there.

ORIGINAL REVIEW

Works pretty darn well, but the fan is virtually useless because the grills, both top and bottom, have too-fine of holes in them to allow air to freely flow through them. All hard drives in this dock still run very hot even with the fan operating properly (yes, I have checked that the fan is working). As it stands now, I might as well have purchased a dock without any fan(s). I agree with other reviewer(s) who say the door should be left open while transferring data to and/or from this dock. Sabrent should either use different types of grills with much bigger holes, or not use any grills at all. I'm going to void the warranty and see if I can take the dock apart and remove the grills, because I'm fairly certain that the fan will move air much better without the grills. We'll see how it goes.

Color: One Bay (Lay-Flat) with Built-in Cooling Fan

Hello, my name is Zack. This product is a very simple and easy solution to getting data to and from your pc. It's plug and play and very easy to set up, which is why I will be using this product a lot. All I had to do was plug in the power supply as well as the USB 3.0 cable, slide in my drive, and hit the power button. It reads the drives just like a flash drive would be read, so accessing files it quick and simple. The added cooling fan helps to eliminate the problem of overheating drives. This product didn't seem to have any problems, and the transfers speeds were pretty good, and can be viewed in the video review.

This review is for the lay-flat dock.

I've used a lot of docking stations (I'm a software developer). I'd say this one is a nice, inexpensive no-frills unit. There is no eSATA connection, but USB 3.0 is good enough for the vast majority of people (transfer rate is up to 5 Gbps). It also has a single blue LED light to indicate power and activity. It flashes during activity and stays lit when powered. It also supports UASP and handles up to 4TB drives. UASP generally provides faster transfers to and from devices like hard drives and SSDs.

It includes the power adapter and a USB 3.0 cable. Being basic and plastic, the unit is also lightweight.

The drive slides right in, just make sure to push it firmly but gently in.

My only concern with this lay-flat design is that I think it's more prone to "user error" than docks that have the drive sticking up. With those docks, it's more evident that the drive is installed and that you need to be careful while it is. With this lay-flat dock, I think the potential is there for people not to be as careful with it when moving it. Because, when docked, the drive is not secure enough for moving and because there is a mostly opaque cover (I wish it was more transparent) with this dock that can make it difficult to see that a drive is installed, it's easier to accidentally move the dock or treat it as though the drive is secure when it's not. The bottom line is to be careful when handling the dock when a drive is installed, because they are not securely attached and the dock should not be moved and transported when there's a drive in it.

Due to the potential issue above, I'm knocking off 1/2 a star. So 4.5 stars (rounding up to 5).
