I am extremely pleased with the thick power cord and the high quality USB3 cable. I have only tried out the 3.5 part of this device, but it is my main purpose for buying it. I may not have used it long, but I have Sabrent USB hubs and now enclosures. If they make it, it is mort likely a sure thing in terms of quality. If I need a computer item and they make it, they will be the manufacturer I select. If you upgrade a drive this is the best way to still have full access to the older drive.I suspect I will be using this for years to come. Just as any USB drive "EJECT IT" at least in Win10. That makes certain all reading and writing is done. Their power light DOES NOT offer any clue if reading or writing is taking place. FOr all USB drives, use software eject, then get the on screen message with tone, then wait a few seconds more before removing it. In this case, the device can simply be powered off by a decent sized power push button. I think it will be the first thing to fail and even then I would not be running to extend my warranty at their quality. You will spend more time uncurling the wires than "installing" the drive. It is just a slide in connection that seems to lock into place and then a lid with a gentle snap to close the enclosure. It is a nice color b;lack and would not be odd in any business environment.

I've had good luck with Sabrent enclosures. This one works OK. Something a little funny about this one, though. The manual, included in the box, refers to a power switch. THERE IS NO POWER SWITCH. Not that one really needs one, but cycling power, if needed, would be handier if one had one. If you want a power switch, don't get this one. I do like the fact that the SATA drive is accessible by just opening a hatch. That is, no unscrewing is needed for disassembly. If you want to swap a SATA drive, you can do it with this enclosure real fast.

I bought the Sabrent ED-DFLT enclosure so that I could format various hard drives on my iMac. It's a rather long story, which I'll shorten to this: I confirmed that the Sabrent enclosure worked when I received it by using an old 2TB drive. I then tossed the box and waited for my 6TB Western Digital Caviar Green drive to arrive from Amazon a couple of weeks later. When plopped into the Sabrent, the new drive showed up on my Mac's desktop. I then set about creating a large encrypted disk image on the drive. It chugged away for 4 full days, seemingly working for the first 3. But after day 4, the formatting was clearly hung, and it had taken my Mac down with it. Upon rebooting, the drive no longer showed up at all. Disk Utility could not even see it. After a lot of detective work, too long to describe here, I confirmed that the 6TB drive was still working fine, but the Sabrent logic board had died, obviously a case of infant mortality.

The good news: it can handle large capacity hard drives. The bad news: not for very long...

And of course, since I tossed the boxing, there is no returning the Sabrent. I therefore spent $23 on a brick, although it won't break me. This case of infant mortality is probably just a fluke, but an annoying one when it happens to you. I should have kept the box a while longer. My bad.

UPDATE 1/2118: To Sabrent's great credit, and this is going back about 2.5 years ago, they stepped in and replaced the enclosure, no charge. I tested it but ran into issues trying to do the above formatting again, and threw it on my junk pile. With hindsight, I'm now realizing that the issue was most likely the hard drive I was using, which I got by ripping open a Western Digital external hard drive and removing it. There's something odd about the firmware in these drives. They're just "not right" when taken out of their manufacturer's shell and fully exposed like this. I think my issue was the hard drive, and NOT Sabrent. Coupled with their excellent customer service, I've now increased the rating to five stars. Because ...

I just bought some 8TB Hitachi hard drives and it was time to format them, again with encryption. These are new, bare hard drives from Amazon, not something I ripped out of an external HD box! Fortunately, I still had the Sabrent enclosure, so I pulled one off the pile, attached the 12V/1.5A power adapter to it, put the 8TB drive in, connected to my Mac Mini, and just like that, the hard drive mounted on the desktop. I formatted it in HFS+, then created a new encrypted disk image, and let it run.

This time, all went well. I discovered that if you open Sierra's Activity Monitor and click on Disk Activity, you get a readout of how fast the data is moving across the interface. I was seeing it move between 110 - 160 MB/sec, averaging about 130 MB/sec. That's not bad at all on my 2012 iMac with a 4-core i7 processor running Sierra (12.6). It's not the fastest i7 there is, so you have to remember that there are calculations that first have to be made before the data can be spit out of the USB3 ports for writing. That takes time to execute, which has to slow transfers down somewhat. USB of any speed never hits its theoretical maximum anyway (4.8Gbps for USB3, or about 600 MB/sec). Considering I was getting only 25 MB/sec with USB2 on this same machine (theoretical maximum speed = 60 MB/sec), actual speeds are less than theoretical speeds by about the same factor for each version of USB. The full 8TB of writing took 17 hours, which averages out to 130 MB/sec, consistent with what I see in Activity Monitor. I would say that's pretty good. I'm happy.

Side note: I got to wondering about Sabrent's advice to run a firmware update. I'm a Mac guy, but I have an old PC running XP. I thought I would take a stab at the upgrade. I downloaded it to the PC, but the update would not run at all. You tell it to RUN the update and nothing happens. My neighbor has a PC running Windows 10, so I took the dock, power supply, and a USB cable to his place. He downloaded the update to his PC, followed the .pdf instructions exactly, the interface presented is NOT what the .pdf shows, but tried running it anyway. Same issue: hit the RUN button and nothing happens. It doesn't freeze or anything like that. It simply does nothing. So much for that!

The key point I'm making is that this same dock that I bought 2.5 years ago (August 2015) easily sees my 8TB drives, runs flawlessly, and runs quite fast, all with no firmware update whatsoever. I don't understand Sabrent's statement that older docks (2.5 years old?) without an update are limited to 4TB. Not mine!

I do not understand why other commenters can't get it to work right. It works perfectly for me.

Considering Sabrent's great customer support, excellent USB3 performance, full support for an 8TB drive, and it's very low price, I gotta give it 5 stars!

UPDATE 1/30/2018: Plugging into two different iMacs running Snow Leopard (10.6.8), neither can see any drive plugged into it. Odd, since at one time it could/did. I don't know what the difference is, but if you're running Snow Leopard, you might consider passing on the Sabrent.

UPDATE 2/12/2018: Okay, so the Sabrent isn't happy with Snow Leopard. Separately, I plugged the Sabrent into my 2012 Mac Mini w/i7 processor and running Sierra (12.6). I plugged a second, different external USB3 drive enclosure to another port, loaded a pair of 8TB X300 Toshiba hard drives in each, and proceeded to move data from one drive to the other. Measured speed is about 130 MB/sec, which is about max transfer rates that these hard drives can deliver. No complaints!

Seems like it can be used vertically, too, although it's billed as a lay-flat model. Only issue with vertical use is there is no way too keep the inserted drive from hinging on drive connector. Unit could use a retaining bar or clip to do that. I just cut off a piece of packing foam and wedged it between the flip-up cover and the drive housing to do so.

On one hand, there's not that much to this case, but on the other it is a significant step up on every level from all other portable HD cases before it. In every other instance it's always a chore to load in your drive, usually requiring tiny screws and often the case itself is bulky.

This one is simple, screw-less, sleek, and is USB 3 which ensures decent speed. My last HD "bay" was in fact simple to use but left the drive itself exposed; this one is just as fast to use but completely encloses the drive itself. Someone really thought through the engineering and it absolutely shows.

A fast device for connecting an external HDD using USB 3.0

If you're looking to add an external Hard disk to your PC using USB, then this unit will do that easily.
No screws or other fixings, just slide the drive into the lay-flat cradle, plug in the supplied plug-top PSU and use the supplied USB-3.0 (A) > USB 3.0 (B) Superspeed cable, and you're away. [Shame it's not supplied with a USB 3.1 Type C connector, but I'm sure it will be in time.]
The cover for the drive is hinged, so it's permanently attached to the base cradle.
One thing that's missed off the Specs here on Amazon is that this docking station is limited to handling HDDs of "up to 4TB capacity". So if you're looking to attach a somewhat larger capacity drive, then I'm afraid this device isn't for you. [I found this out the hard way. I hope I save you the trouble!]
In function, it works very well, and it does have a fast USB interface, allowing you to backup your internal HDD at up to 5Gbps if you're using a USB 3.0 connection to your PC.

My mum had a HDD die in an old computer and thought that would be it, all documents etc, gone. Bought this (being the family tech support) to see if I could get anything back and it worked a treat! Managed to mount and open the drive on a different computer, with the computer just seeing it as an external HDD, even if it was a bit shonky, noisy and slow (the HDD, not this caddy). Absolutely essential bit of kit for anybody that tinkers with computers. The shell covering the drive when it's in use is a bit flimsy and can vibrate, but the overall product is great and feels pretty solid.

Vor kurzem die 1Bay gekauft in einer Aktion.
Die Dockingstation selbst war in einer sehr soliden Verpackung,, beim Auspacken fiel mir aber auf, dass die Dockingstation selbst aus ziemlich wackligen Plastik bestand,
Eine Festplatte wird beim Einbau durch ein "Schaumstoffkeil" fixiert.
Leider findet dort kein USB-C-Anschluss Verwendung, am Gehäuse ist nur ein USB 3.0 B-Stecker, eigentlich veraltet,
Das Kabel des externen Netzteil ist ausreichend lang. Schön auch der Ein-/Ausschalter am Gehäuse.
Ich habe den Test mit einer meiner alten 8TB-3,5"-Platten gemacht.
Wie die meisten hier festgestellt haben, wurde die Platte auch bei mir als GPT mit 16 GB erkannt.
Das liegt daran, das die Platte ( hier bei mir ) intern als GPT-Platte in einem Windows-Rechner als (GPT-formatierte ) Platte Verwendung fand.

Diese sogenannten Schutzpartitionen werden dann nicht mehr als eigenständige externe Platte erkannt.
Um sie auszulesen, muss (!) man die Platte wieder in einem Windowsrechner mit internen SATA-Anschluss anhängen und ggf. an einer anderen Platte sichern.
Danach muss man erst eine GPT-Partition anlegen und löschen. Die Platte ist dann auch extern wieder änderbar.
Man kann die Platte dann extern z.B. mit einem Hilfsprogramm wie Partition Magic 8.1 oder 9.0 (freie Version) als externe MBR-Partition anlegen. (zur Not auch wieder als GPT, aber dann muss die Platte extern in der Dockingstation sein) .
Damit wurden die 8TB bei mir in der Dockingstation erkannt und waren auch les- und beschreibbar.

Wieder dieser umständlichen Prozedur gibts bei mir nur 4 Sterne, obwohl das hier eindeutig an MS-Windows (10 und größer) liegt.
Die Schreib- und Lesegeschwindigkeit der Platte in der Dockingstation unterscheidet sich an einem USB 3.0 Anschluss ( an einem X570-Board) nicht von einem internen Anschluss.
Die Geschwindigkeit ist also sehr gut.
Im Dauerbetrieb wird das Gehäuse allerdings ordentlich warm wegen der fehlenden Belüftungsschlitze.
Auch deswegen nur 4 Sterne.
Aber wer die oben beschriebenen Macken bewältigt, hat ein gutes Gehäuse, was auch mit Platten > 4TB zurecht kommt.
Insofern empfehlenswert.
Wegen dem etwas klapprigen Plastiks werde ich sie aber nur im Notfall "mit durch die Gegend schleppen."

When thus caddy arrived I was disappointed to see that it is made almost entirely of dark grey plastic. Only the circuits are metal. It has a convenient design - an SSD just slides in and the top of the caddy is hinged, so accessing the SSD is extremely easy. The device worked first time, and with exception of its less-than-wonderful construction (plastic conducts heat badly, so a metal caddy is better for cooling), it seemed fine. Then, the the blue 'on' LED turned off, and despite trying the caddy in different mains sockets AND with a different power lead (which has a transformer as part), the caddy would not take power. I have retrurned it to Amazon. Unfortunately, I bought two, and the other is still working, but I am inclined to return it o quality grounds. Trouble is, I have not kept the boxes it came in, so whilst returning a faulty one is justified, sending the other back when it cannot be re-sold is a different matter. The supplier is not Amazon, who would just put it in their Warehouse to be re-sold in plain packaging. A third party cannot do this.
