1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Speeds
By Sherlock Holmes on November 25, 2019
I own a bunch of external USB drives from various companies and various speeds. I was so excited to get this drive that promises transfer speeds upto 1000MB/s and when I connected it to my PC and tried copying a few files, I was shocked to see that the copy speeds were close to 30MB/s from my NVMe M.2 hard drive. I tried copying different types of files - photos, videos, movies etc. Same results. To make sure that the problem was with this drive and not the USB port, I tried copying the same files to my Samsung T5, I got my typical speeds of 250-500 MB/s with the T5.

As a last resort, tested this Sabrent Drive with Crystal diskmark software and the software too was only getting less than 40MB/s at best. A random 4K read clocked was only 18.65 MB/s.

It wouldn't take a genius to guess that I immediately initiated the return of this device. I am not sure if I will go for this brand again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant little drive vs. Samsung T5
    By T. Leonard on January 2, 2020
As a global commuter for work, size and weight of the things I carry are very important. I already own several of the little Samsung T5 drives but they're all 512GB. To support backups on a new 1TB MacBook Pro 16", I needed a larger capacity drive. Other reviews I read lead me to an interest in this little drive by Sabrent. I thought the Samsung T5 was small. This Sabrent is half the width, and a few millimeters shorter and only 1mm taller. The metal case is very solid feeling and it manages the temperature well. I thought the drive, being so small, might get a little warmer than the Samsung but in fact it runs cooler. This barely gets above room temperature even under extended write periods. I haven't verified the speed claims of the drive but I can tell you that it runs a Windows 10 image via Parallels on my Mac as though it were installed on the internal drive. No latency whatsoever. Same as the Samsung T5, in that regard.
I've not had this drive long enough to make any claims on reliability but after a few months, I'll update my review with that information. If it holds up as well as my T5 drives have, I can say I've found my new favorite hard drive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unstable performance, extremely slow in real use! at last test with USB3.2 reached only 36Mb/s
By David on January 13, 2020
    Edited review!

(Note: Its possible that the specific unit is defective but in light of many other customers reviews it seem to have quite a bit of faulty devices with same behavior.)

    Conclusion & Bottom line:
    =====================
After few weeks of experience The Rocket nano 1TB looks like something who every one wish, with exciting design, and promising specifications. But unfortunately the ongoing use and experience is utterly disappointing.
The device is characterized by instability with frequent hangs behavior, along with a very low performance that is actually lower than even a generic flash device.
Pro: Small & cool dosing, lightweight, supplied with 2 matching cables (though too short and not flexible enough)
Cons: Un-stable, Extremely slow, very poor performance, tends to hang continuously. reach in test rate of 36Mb/s instead of 1000Gb/s, while in real usage its even worst drop down to 1500k/s.

Tests were performed in 3 sessions, and review is edited to update and providing the results.
Well, since my first review, I collected more info & experience with this Rocket usage, and things just went worst. :(
My first review was written (about two weeks ago) after having many attempts to find out what is the *real* performance speed.
I used many PC's with various HW. I was able to archive at best results only 1/4 of its specification, means around 250mb/s, This was with H81 chipset which runs USB 3.0 (not 3.1).
But I wasn't able to get such performance on newer HW which runs the lasted USB 3.2 10gb/s.
in these cases it always hang or achieve poor performance even slower then generic flash drive.
I tried several times to perform tests on the brand new PC (running Win10 64Bit) with lasted USB 3.2 10Gb/s port (Intel build in) in most of them the disk just stack and wasn't even able to complete the tests. so it was impossible to perform the tests & competition. - no screenshot were saved for that session.

At the second test session, the machine used for testing was only USB 3.0 NEC chipset, where after several attempts only few terminated, but at all the rest, the Rocket failed to perform a complete test.
See screenshot & the tests details below.
Also tried to use it in real use, copying 250GB of MP3 files while attached to an USB 3.1 port (5Gb/s), took more then 6 hours, which most the time the transfer rate was under 1500 kb/s - extremely slow compared to any other flash or mechanical HD.
In practice, in real use, the device is malfunctioning, often hangs up, and its performance drops drastically after more than 2 minutes of use.
This was frustrating and nerve-wracking experience.
As a PC technician with access to hundreds of different types of computers, I have not been able to prove a reasonable use of this device.
Even compared to a standard flash device its capabilities are terrible.
It is possible that the only unit I received is defected, so it is important to get feedback from other users.

Screenshots attached related to the second test session (first group) are for 3 different storage, which were taken in competition on USB 3.0 port powered by NEC (not the 3.2 which failed in all attempts).
    1. Rocket nano 1TB (succeed only once ! )
    2. Corsair Flash Voyager GTX 256GB USB 3.1 Premium
    3. Silicon Power jewel j80 usb 3.1 32GB
all screenshots includes description of the relevant storage and the relevant test results.

A third tests session was taken on 30.01.20.
This time I tried again a new Lenovo PC. this are the specifications.
    CPU -Intel I5- 8th generation, 12GB DDR4, Plextor PH6 System SSD (runs Win10 Pro 64 bit), NVIDIA 1650,
This PC nativelly support USB3.2 10Gb/s by Intel chipset.
I used 3 different USB devices as above replacing the SP J80 by the system SSD -Plextor PH6. runs 3 software for the benchmarks.
    ATTO , AS-SSD, & Crystal Disk-Mark.

The results are shown in the new screenshots (Group two).
The rocket failed to perform any tests with ATTO & AS-SSD, only 'Crystal-disk' succeed it once (after many failures) but with a rate of 36Mb/s~ only. slower then the Silicon-Power J80.

    =========
My earlier review: Tested the "Rocket" and was unable to be even close to half of the declared speed.
I repeated test on 4 different machines which had various HW combination, the highest speed I was able to reach stuck on 250mb/s. Both read & write operations. only 1/4 of the declared.
So I can not confirm if its only my specific one that is defective or is just the real speed of this Disk. very disappointing.

    2TB Sabrent Nano (SB-2TB-NANO-BLK)

    - A tiny, high-quality enclosure (JMS583).
    - Sabrent 2242 m.2 NVMe SSD DRAM-less, Low-Power (Phison E13T).
    - Very good synthetic benchmarks results (Crystal Disk Mark 7 attached).
    - The device does get warm but it does not thermal throttle.

    - Real-world transfer speeds are a LOT slower than with a decent 2280 m.2 NVMe SSD + separate enclosure.
    - Sabrent's DRAM-less m.2 slows down a lot as soon as cache is exhausted.
    - Also some connectivity issues with my AMD X570 motherboard (probably due to JMS583).

    I did a real-world file transfer (863 files across 48 folders, total of 245GB | 1TB Samsung 970 Pro OS drive ):
    Write to: Asus Arion + 2TB Adata SX8200 Pro | 4m 57s | 844.71 MB/s
    Write to: 2TB Sabrent Rocket Nano | 9m 02s = 542s | 462.88 MB/s
    Read from: Asus Arion + 2TB Adata SX8200 Pro | 5m 07s = 307s | 817.20 MB/s
    Read from: 2TB Sabrent Rocket Nano | 7m 44s = 464s | 540.69 MB/s

I got the Asus Arion and 2TB Adata SX8200 Pro at about the same price as the Sabrent Rocket Nano 2TB. The Asus enclosure is heavier and larger, but that is the only downside. No connectivity issues, SSD runs a little cooler, but as with the example above, performs 82% faster in large writes, and 51% in large reads! Since I copy a lot from and to the external drives often... As nice and sleek as the Sabrent Nano is, the alterntive with a 2280 m.2 makes a lot more sense. If you only ever copy a couple Gigabytes at a time, this will be less relevant to you.

Unless you MUST have one of the smallest NVMe enclosure, do consider alternatives. I am returning this to use the Asus enclosure and the Adata SSD. Most probably even a 2280 Sabrent enclosure and 2280 Sabrent m.2 will do a lot better than the Sabrent Rocket Nano, but I have not tested this. Again, this will very likely give you much better real-world file transfer performance for larger datasets. If you copy any set of data beyond about 20-25GB (ish), the device will slow down to transfer at around 450MB/s write and 550MB/s read in my case.

Also if you have X570, maybe also find enclosures with alternative controllers to the JMS583. I have had zero issues with either ASM2362 or RTL9210 based enclosures (e.g. Asus Arion, Orico M2PJM-C3).
