Tricky to format (APFS) or Partition SSD on a Apple Macintosh

Tricky to format (APFS) or Partition SSD on a Apple Macintosh
I just received a Rocket XTRM-Q 1TB Thunderbolt3 Ext. SSD. On my 2019 Apple iMac running Blackmagicdesign Disk speed test (connect as Thunderbolt3) gave 1380 MB/s Write and 2431 MB/s Read. (My internal SSD from Apple was 1852 Writes, 2194 Reads). Yes it gets Hot if you write to it a lot (ex. recording Video to it, but running an Operating System OS from it, it's not hot).Next it's tricky to format and partition this SSD for a Macintosh. It comes out to the box formatted for window (ExFat). It's not recommend unless you are using it between both Macs and Windows for compatibility. Apple recommends using APFS format for SSDs (Mac OS Extended-Journaled is a 2nd choice). Photo explains how to formatted it, or do a google search on "Format External SSD w/APFS - Apple Community". After drive is formatted APFS and GUID Partition Map (not Master Boot Record), you can now partition the SSD. If it's more they three partitions it may fail. Remove ALL partitions and try again. It may take two or three times for it to be successful. What I'm doing is on partition#1 is have a copy of current OS. Then make a copy of Partition #1 over to Partition#2. Then upgrade Partition#2 to the newest Operating System (Big Sur). Then Boot/Start-up on Big Sur and see how it works before copying it over to the main running OS on the computer. The trick is to use a utility that makes the SSD Partition Bootable. I use a utility called SuperDuper! (search on Superduper Mac). It's also great for backups. So once the SSD has an Operating System that you can boot/start-up from. To start the Mac from the external hard drive/SSD you hold the "Option" key down during start-up. Then select the drive you want to start the computer from. Reasons you would want backup of your OS = if you think there's Malware on your computer and you want clean it off and recover from your Backup OS on your SSD. Or if an update to OS messes up the computer you have a backup on your SSD to recover. Also Developers love multiple OSs versions to test. Side Note: It is recommended by Security Experts for Macintoshes to take your Internal Hard drive and partition it into two drives. One Drive contains the Operation system-MacOS (usually 100 to 200GB) and the other partition being you Data Drive for your personal information. This way if you need to reinstall the OS the personal data is not affected.

The 16TB version contains two 8TB drives inside. The drive works well for what it does. It's very fast and (as far as I can tell in limited usage) reliable. It requires an external power brick (included) which is a bit less convenient than bus power. The drive runs very hot, especially if you use both internal 8TB drives at the same time (in RAID for example) -- almost hot enough to burn you. Note that it does NOT WORK with USB (maybe some of the lower capacity variants work with USB, but this one does not). You MUST have Thunderbolt, and most likely you must have Thunderbolt 3 (I can't test earlier versions).

I believe this product is discontinued; the replacement product is a portable Thunderbolt dock which includes a hard drive but also the rest of the ports that make up the dock, for a cheaper price.

If you read the description of the drive then you have a pretty good idea why this drive is becoming popular. It is not cheap but it is also not expensive for what you get. Excellent warrantee, speeds come close to the suggested numbers in their adds and as expected, it does get a bit warm. The silicon (?) case they offer is definitely worth using. As many know, the higher speed ssd type of offerings do tend to get warm and in some instances, people have said their computers too suffer heat increase. This drive, attached to a Mac Mini M1 did get a bit warm but not overly hot. If you need a good backup drive or drive needed for speed (such as for art, movie making etc.) this is one drive you may want to investigate and ultimately, buy.

In terms of thickness, the drive is much thicker than some external SSDs. With the silicon case on, it is at least 3x that of a T5 Samsung. For me, that is a trivial matter but some have their tastes of "sleek." I expect I will be buying more from Sabrent given the warrantees on some of their products and the speed.

I bought a 2TB digital drive and quickly ran out of space. So needed a bigger drive. After looking around I found the Sabrent Rocket. What a machine! Tiny so it doesn't take up a lot of space, this drive is a real rocket.

Fast, reliable, easy to set up and use, the Sabrent Rocket does it all. And the most differential between the 2TB drive I first purchased, and the Sabrent was $200. Think about that. $200 more for twice the space.

My 2TB drive was a La Cie. I've bought a half dozen solid-state drives from LaCie and have always loved them. Given this was a different brand I was a bit hesitant at first. But once I installed it, I had zero hesitation. This is a great drive at a great price. Tough to beat.

So I received this product and have been using it in conjunction with my 2019 Macbook Pro, my Western Digital 5TB HD, my G-Drive 1TB SSD, and my Sandisk Extreme 1TB SSD. The Sabrent XTRM is exactly that (Extremely Fast). I have the 1TB option because I don't use it for storage (BUT THE SPACE IS THERE JUST IN CASE), I use it to speed up my editing and file transferring work flow. Now this product is blazing quick but you have to keep your expectations in check because its speed will vary depending on the other product its either reading or writing information from.

For example, when transferring files from my Macbook, real world numbers are 4-8 mins per 20GB. Compare that to file transfers between the SABRENT and my other SSD's 1-2mins per 20GB. So don't just assume that because you have the SABRENT it's going to make everything lightning fast because it will/won't depending on the device its communicating with.

Now with that said I knew this thing was definitely a game changer when I attempted to move 650GB of information from my G-Drive to my WD HD. What I did was I transferred it first to the SABRENT (SSD TO SSD) this took 18 MINUTES. READ THAT AGAIN (18 MINUTES TO MOVE 650GB, WOW). From the SABRENT to the WD HD was 45 MINS. Now compare that to my G-Drive straight to my WD HD the same 650GB was estimated to take 2 and a half hours.

THE SABRENT XTRM IS WORTH EVERY PENNY IT RETAILS FOR, JUST MAKE SURE YOUR OTHER DEVICES ARE UP TO SNUFF TO GET THE BEST/MOST OUT OF IT.

    Pros
This drive connects quick and easily
    Read and write speeds fast
It durable metal with a nice rubber case for extra protection
Has both usb c and usb c to type A cords so you can use it with older computers too.

If you transfer alot of files in a row it can slow down fairly significantly. From my understanding it’s when it reaches the cache limit.

I love this little drive. I have a 2017 13" MBP with 256gb built in SSD, non-upgradable (thanks a lot Apple).
Bought a cheap shell (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SSRT9RZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for my MBP and velcroed this drive and some cable management guides to the shell and now I have an extra TB of storage.

This thing is screaming fast! I copied 100gb in a couple of minutes.
I have most my apps and my dropbox files all on this drive. Everything runs with no problems. Be aware, if you want sync it to Dropbox on Mac, you will need to reformat it to either HFS+ or APFS first, so do this first before putting anything on this drive if you plan on using it with Dropbox.

It does get kind of warm, but not hot enough to melt the adhesive that holds the velcro and not too hot to touch, so I wouldn't worry about the heat.

It weight close to nothing. I will definitely buy more if needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very fast but...
Reviewed in Canada on June 14, 2022
I use it on a MacMini i7 Intel 6 core processors, connected to a Thunderbolt port. I'm impressed by the speed, but the enclosure becomes so hot that I can't even touch it!!! So I'm worried about how long it can handle such high working temperature and how long it will last. I'm afraid soldering inside will start melting... Otherwise it works as expected.
UPDATE: it becomes very hot during a very large file transfer like a complete backup to another device, and then it cools off after a while. So it should not be a problem I guess. I change my evaluation to 5*.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning drive. Fast. Tiny. Did I say fast?

I've owned almost every major brand of drive and RAID array built for Thunderbolt and I have to say that this is easily my new favourite for stunningly fast performance in a portable, bus powered, drive. I've shared pictures of running Black Magic Speed Test on the drive. It hits those speeds almost regardless of the test file size and duration you run it. The drive gets warm during extended operation but not HOT. The case is solidly built and clearly is a good conductor for the heat that is normal to be generated by this type of drive. I don't write reviews often because I worry to much about other people having different experiences...here, I'm not worried one bit. Buy the drive and enjoy. I bought two initially, and I just ordered two more. I'm using them for editing 8K video and 50Megapixel uncompressed RAW photos (80MB to 120MB each) and it never hiccups at all. :-)

    Does what it should.
but after a short time it had a rattle inside. I had to open it up. turns out the screw that held the board to the body was loose. after is tightened it there where no more problems.
I'm playing my Steam games directly from it.
