I have an old POS system, which is basically a windows xp computer with a serial port and a parallel port. The parallel port is used for a receipt printer, and the serial port is used for a line display to show the registered contents to customers. But the serial port is damaged. Installed serial port driver is okay and all functional. But it was unable to communicate to the line display unit.
So I added this cable to a USB port and assigned its port number to COM7. And I also assigned the line display to COM port 7. Now it works.
I bought this cable back in 2017, seven years ago and been kept in my desk. Now it became a solution provider.

Not compatible with latest drivers for Win11, but there's a workaround
I got the infamous “PL2303TA-DO-NOT-SUPPORT-Windows-11” error when I first attached the adapter to my Windows 11 (24H2) PC. This happened with the latest driver from 2024, automatically installed via Windows update.After manually removing the driver and reinstalling the Windows 10 driver (from 2015), it worked perfectly. It seems Prolific and/or Microsoft is arbitrarily trying to kill off Windows 11 support for this chipset/adapter via the driver itself, as the hardware works fine otherwise. Something to keep in mind with adapters like these, moving forward.

This is the first time I've written poor review for an adapter which electrically functions but mechanically it's a mess. The equipment I need to connect to has a DB9F connector. This adapter has a DB9M connector. So far so good. Only this adapter has a nut instead of a screw. The photo in the listing for this device showed a nut, but the nuts are typically removable, they have a screw end on the opposite side. When I tried to remove the nut it just spun in the housing. It won't come off!! Fortunately I had a dremel tool handy. After breaking 4 cutoff wheels and some melted plastic I finally had something that would mate. This was an unnecessary problem. If the mfr simply used a screw then there would be no problem mating to another connector with a screw, because the screws are designed to have end play to retract out of the way of a nut. If they used neither a screw or a nut it would be no problem. If they used a nut which was removable it would have been no problem. If the connector you're mating to has a nut then don't buy this product, this manufacturer hasn't executed the normal and expected mechanical design effort for compatibility.
One more thing, I was one of the lucky ones who did not need a driver. The device came with a CD but no driver link. Are these people stuck in the 20th century? Why not a download link in the product listing, or on the box, or on the CD? Why do we have to chase them for small stuff like this??
Next time I'll buy from a vendor who cares about their customers by taking care of the details so that we don't have to.
