After a poor start, I'm happy with the product

The so-called manual is typically short on clarity and information. After much experimentation I got the rear L/R speakers to work for very true surround sound. I found the volume setting much too sensitive: with the controller at low, the volume is already moderately loud, despite attenuation in Windows. Otherwise the device is very good, and the sound equal to my old 5.1 Sound Blaster Audigy card that cost me many times more. For tech support, you need to make a costly long distance call. Sabrent would not offer me tech support by e-mail.

I don't know what I'll do with the 31.5" TosLink cable as it's too short for anything I can think of. But all-in-all, the product is well-worth the price; and I like the convenience of being able to plug in my earphones with the device sitting on my desk. Nice. And it works fine on my laptop at the office. When I build my next computer, I won't need to fiddle with card installation and making a bracket fit the chassis.

If anyone needs a clean 4.1, 5.1, or 7.1 AC3 audio file to test surround sound, I'll be happy to share one that I created at Audacity101.

A Great Upgrade From My Motherboard's Built In Sound

I have an Asus P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 motherboard and the on-board sound has always been an issue where it will pick up a variety of interference. I decided to look for a USB sound solution that would give me at least true 5.1 surround sound and that's when I came across this Sabrent unit. It was well below the price on the Creative USB soundcards so I decided to give it a try and am very happy that I did.

I plugged the unit into a USB slot and downloaded the latest drivers and installed them. Ran my optical cable to my surround speaker system and I was up and running. No more electronic interference and as of yet no system glitches when playing back audio at all. The sound quality is very good and I'd say a pretty substantial improvement over my motherboard's sound.

I tried the unit briefly with headphones and the sound was excellent with more than enough volume.

It's amazing at this price point to have both analog and digital outputs and if you still have a need for analog mic inputs you'll find two of them on this device. This item does include an optical cable, but it's very short so if you need more than a foot or two you'll want to order a longer cable.

The bottom line is I don't believe you can beat this for the price if you're looking for a USB soundcard. The setup was painless and the sound quality is excellent.

I paired this up with some TakStar hifi 2050 dedicated headphones. I would recommend pairing them up with nicer headphones though. I have burned them in for many hours now. Easily over 100. I have noticed that the virtual surround sound that the sabrent provides is now noticeable. In counter-strike for example, i can pin point people through walls just by hearing their footsteps and then prefire them before they come out. It works great for HD audio files too. The sabrent has its own mixer and effects software as well as speaker location with a sub in the virtual surround sound section. It also has a built in voice morpher, which I haven't been able to get working yet. I've just been plugging my mic into the onboard jack of my mobo. The worst issue I had was that the software manager always crashed any time I played the game Dragon Nest. I am guessing this is because of the anti-cheat program that goes along with games like that. I gave it 4 because I couldn't get a few things to work, but it is overall a steal at under $20 by far.

P.S. The cd that came with it was bent beyond repair, but you never use those anyways. Always download latest drivers for anything online.

Wasn't to sure what to expect. I needed a optical output for my PC to my AV receiver so far this works just fine, the user interface is a little confusing, I have mine set to 6 channel = 5.1 output via optical,just make sure you set windows playback devices to match and set as default I wasn't getting test tones from each speaker until I did. My AV 5.2 surround receiver says that the optical input is receiving LPCM 2.0 48khz(2 channel) then my receiver jus handles the rest like Dolby PLII etc. Hope this helps some of you
UPDATE 6 months later:I have a pretty nice and sensitive receiver hooked up to this and now I'm noticing some slight static and little pops,not matter what file type I play mp3 ,flac,etc. restarting and unplugging and back in again doesn't help either,was good for awhile though going with a card this time

Has issues with Win 7 64bit

I have it installed and working on a Win 7 64bit machine and the sound card works however every time i try to launch the software that the .exe installs it locks up the computer and I have to hard boot my system to get it to start working again. As long as i never launch the application it works fine. I bought this only to use the optical out.

It does come with an optical cable .

I would not buy this again and since it does work (Cant launch program to fine tune things) i wont return it. I will update if i find a way to make the program work correctly.

*** Update About a year after purchase

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 64bit and it works great now. Software launches and runs like it should. Win 8 is basically Win 7 so i dont know what made the difference but it works great now.

I changed to 4 starts because it now works for me as it should with a different OS.
