Great for when you need to mount a SATA hard drive in a hurry without bothering with an external enclosure. (Mind you not many external enclosures support SATA internally anyway.)

I bought this converter because bad RAM crashed my PC and corrupted WinXP. Since I had to re-install Windows I upgraded my primary SATA hard drive, but I forgot to pull some important files from the old one. Enter this SATA-to-USB adapter. I just plugged in my old drive, it mounted like any other enclosure, and within in minutes I had copied my files.

Note that this device comes with a power brick that has a SATA power connector (not pictured). What's a bit odd is that the power supply has no power switch -- you just plug in your drive to power it up, and unplug the cord to power it down. This is not a problem, of course, but a switch might have been a practical addition.

The actual USB 2.0 performance seems good. I didn't benchmark it, but I had no trouble moving large 1-2GB files, which shouldn't be a problem with any USB 2.0 interface in principle, but I've had USB 2.0 enclosures that choke with big files or flake out from time to time. But not this one, apparently.

And excellent little gizmo.

I needed to back up data from my hard drive after the operating system crashed. Got the cable, hooked it up to my notebook, transfered my files. it was that easy. It's not the most elegant piece of hardware, no switch, two seperate cables, limited instruction book... but all you do is hook it up, the cables only attach one way, plug it in, and you are done. it was inexpensive and worked. what more can you ask?

This SATA converter operated perfectly and immediately upon connection to my catastrophically corrupted HD. I used it effectively in conjunction with data recovery software to salvage ten years worth of personal data. I have finally learned my lesson about creating data back-ups, and thanks to this simple and useful device, it was not too late.

Do not hesitate to use this product for recovery or file transfer operations. However, due to the nature of this product, you will have wires strewn about during use, so it not ideal if you are looking for something to use regularly for external data storage. In any event, it was clearly designed for the former use and not the latter.

As others have noted, it requires an outlet for power, rather than drawing it directly over the USB connection. Please do not plan to use as mobile connection for your external storage.

Hope this was helpful.

Purchased two of these adapters in order to upgrade my TivoHD using WinMFS. Worked great using Vista plug and play.

I bought this to use since my laptop died. It works good, plugs right in and all my files from my laptop harddrive show up on the desktop. no complaints from me. Fast loading and copying and I may use the drive attached to this as storage since this makes it feel like a great backup storage drive.

update 5/22/16
I've had these for over a year and it still works as normal.

I bought this because I often work on computers and needed a way to hot-swap hard drives so as to be able to pull data or erase them. On a Multiple Windows 7 machines that I've tested this on, 95% of the time it will either just not be recognized at all or it will have errors (One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it). I usually have better luck on Linux distros, but even then it's hit and miss.

It really shouldn't be complicated to connect a drive and just expect it to work. Steer clear of this garbage; it just doesn't function properly. I've spent more time and hassle trying to get it to work than it's worth.

I had built a Gaming Rig back in 2005 which lasted me up until last month. I was sad not only because my "baby" had finally died on me, but I had many pictures, music and misc files I never got a chance to back up. I am so glad I came across this drive converter. I took my old Maxtor 200GB drive out of my old PC, dusted it off, and connected the Sabrent converter. My new PC instantly recognized the hard drive and took a few minutes to "do its thing" so I could navigate through all the folders. Granted I didn't do a complete back up, I did cherry pick and copy about 140GB of data to my new PC.

My current PC is running Windows 8 and my old hard drive had Windows XP installed on it.

I highly reccomend the Sabrent Converter.

The SATA hard drive in my HP desktop stopped booting up...I didn't think it was a hard drive "crash," because I know what hard drives sound like when it is a hardware failure. I'm not sure why Windows Vista stopped booting up, but when it did I could not access that hard drive. So I needed a way to retrieve the data. I could have taken the hard drive to the Geek Squad and paid over $150 for them to do it, but instead I ordered this device. Very straightforward. Within ten minutes after opening the package from Amazon, I had it connected to my old hard drive, plugged the other end (USB) into my wife's HP desktop, and was transferring files. Nothing to complain about with this product.
