I prefer this to the 1954 original

I do not discuss plot details or give away spoilers. My take on this movie is that it moves along at a more brisk pace than the original, directed by Billy Wilder. This one, by Sydney Pollack, has a more modern feel and the difference approaches between the two directors is a study in itself.

Directors aside, the casting for this is spot on. Of course the cast of the 1954 version to which I am comparing contains some of our greatest actors, and Audrey Hepburn is absolutely magnetic in Wilder's film. However, Julia Ormond is the perfect choice for the remake. She is one of the reasons why this film worked out so well (in my opinion.)

Although I was born in the late 1940s and grew up revering the actors in the earlier version, as well as loving the production values of the older movies in general, this is one remake that eclipses the original. I am set in my ways, so for me referring a remake over an original film does not happen often. In the case of this movie, though, it comes across as modern, paced to match 1990s life in the US (with dialog to match), and showcases a cast that was perfect for the script.

Well I guess I'm just a sucker for the one and only word..? ROMANCE ,, I bet you thought I was going to say "Love".. ? When you look up the meaning for "ROMANCE" it states that it is " A quality or feeling of Mystery,Excitement and remoteness from Everyday life". Well both films have managed to evoke such feelings for me.. Now take the original that was filmed in 1954 with a cast of the late Audrey Hepburn,William Holden,Humphrey Bogart and Martha Hyer. It was directed by the late Billy Wilder who was born in 1906. That's the same year of my late beloved maternal grandmother birth year as well. He died in 2002 at the tender age of 95 ..meaning that he outlived most of the actors that appeared in "Sabrina" and he was alive to see the re-make too. The film director Sydney Pollack was one of the best from his generation as was Mr.Wilder from his ..what this movie had going for it was "Color,Locations and up dated WEALTH".. It was shot in the town of Glen Cove,New York...and was onetime owned by Junius Spencer Morgan # the son of renowned financier J.P Morgan. The estate is currently in private ownership ..the music was simply beautiful ...especially the song at the end , during the credits.. The budget was around 56 million and brought in 87 million...the casting of Julia Ormond was a mistake..she was just to stiff.. Harrison Ford,Gregg Kinnear,Nancy Marchand and John Wood stood out.. To be honest I don't know who would have fit the part ..maybe an unknown actress ...? Over all I enjoy both of the films... and I have the CD (compact Disc) to the soundtrack that I bought at a music store nearly 7-8 years back....

I DO love a good romance...

I remember watching the original Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn and loving it, so when this newer version was on the TV, I watched it and loved it as well. Unlike some, who either liked the older or the newer version of it, I'd have to say that I liked both equally. Yes, they each have their own negative/positive moments (ie: the comment where Hepburn's "grown up" Sabrina was more childish acting, whereas Ormond's was more adult-like and sophisticated) I do have to agree with. HOWEVER, it is the storyline itself that captured my interest from the start, and I belive that both actresses played the role convincingly.

Possible SPOILER alert:
In my own opinion, Sabrina doesn't entirely "grow up" after she leaves for Paris, since one of the reasons for her going is to get away from David, the womanizing younger brother of the millionaire family her father chauffeurs. As a child/teenager, she is (pretty much) obsessed with him, while he doesn't even see her as anything but the chauffeur's daughter. But when she is in Paris, she cant seem to forget him, while he is now finally planning to settle down and marry. When she returns home, she is a very beautiful woman, with the touch of Paris elegance, and yet she is clearly not over David. He has now noticed her as a woman and is paying her the attention she's always wanted him to.

David's older brother, Linus, always looking out for the family business and money, is none too pleased with the attention David is now showing Sabrina, because David's fiancee is the daughter of their biggest business client, and one mis-step could put a halt to the contract. Therefore, Linus decides to step in and distract Sabrina from David before things go too far and ruin the merger. Long story short, they both unintentionally fall in love with each other. I think after spending time with Linus, and actually BEING in love rather than infatuated, NOW she is grown up. Which things matter more than just a silly girlhood crush. Only, Linus has always had the business-side at the forefront, and knows he may have to break her heart. Ah, the decisions he must face! What's more important, Money or love? Which does he choose?

I love this movie and I just *had* to buy it...

A remake better than the original in many ways

I had always liked the original Audrey Hepburn version, but I think I like the remake quite a bit better. It is updated to be relatable today and they did a great job. I've watched this many times and it's still enjoyable every time. The script is witty. Harrison Ford is a better fit than Humphrey Bogart. While she is not Audrey Hepburn, Julia Ormond is luminous in this movie. As David says, she is dazzling. I think her performance is what really makes this movie. Her soft voice, and the blend of sophistication and innocence, make it easy to understand why both brothers were smitten. Her portrayal of joy and heartbreak in Linus' office is so touching. I think her performance in Sabrina is so much better than her other big movies during this period of her career, Legends of the Fall and First Knight.

You can always find things to criticize in any movie and Sabrina is no exception. I think the opening scenes in Paris could have been better, but I think they are better than the original. Sabrina is a really good movie and one of the few that I can watch over and over. And the soundtrack is really good too.
