Melissa Joan Hart's infectious screen persona and charm elevates this sweet little sitcom far beyond anything you'd expect from a series that circles around the day-to-day life of a teenage witch and all the baggage that goes along with it. Based loosely on the Archie Comics franchise (with a slight nod to "Bewitched"), SABRINA... effortlessly mixed teen angst and magical mayhem. The early seasons in particular were marked by clever writing and snappy dialogue. Only when Sabrina moved to college in the fifth season did the well start to run dry.
The best years of SABRINA, in my opinion, were Seasons Two and Three. In addition to the imaginative story arcs (Sabrina studying for her Witches' License and tracking down the oft-fabled Family Secret), there's also the unique chemistry which Ms Hart shared with her co-star Lindsay Sloane, who plays Sabrina's best friend Valerie. "Friend" characters in SABRINA didn't tend to last all that long (and got written out with very little fanfare or explanation - Jenny from Season One for example) but Valerie was the best of the bunch. Jenna Leigh Green, playing Sabrina's snotty arch-rival Libby for the first three seasons, was another highlight.
Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick are Sabrina's wacky aunts Hilda and Zelda; Nick Bakay is the voice of scheming feline Salem. Nate Richert is dreamy boyfriend Harvey; and "Punky Brewster" herself--Soleil Moon Frye--is introduced as Roxie in the college years.
A wise buy for those who've waited for the full series.
However for the price alone and the many MANY issues ive heard about this box set I cant in all good conscience give it 5 stars.
The fact that they took a show that so many of us grew up with and loved and tarnished it by cutting scenes replacing music and even shortening episodes is ridiculous.
This was a slap in the face to the fans of this series .
The music regardless of the greedy copyright issues so many of these dvds have nowadays was part of the shows charm.
For example in the 90's there was so much good music on Sabrina from ChumbaWumba Backstreet Boys Nsync Robyn etc..
By getting rid of all those nostalgic and enjoyable songs it destroys the scenes that those songs originally were a part of.
Who wants to listen too generic music in the place of classic 90's songs?
The fact that they cut scenes out was wrong and greedy enough as it was but to also shorten episodes themselves was even worse.
I still love the Christmas episodes but this ruined my feeling like I could finally own this set and hear Johnny Mathis sing in that one Christmas episode ive always loved.
I think this dvd set is a disaster personally more power to the ones who purchased it not knocking any of you.
Just simply tired of these greedy companies always giving the fans the shaft when it comes to releasing tv shows.
There always seems to be issues or cuts or edits which ruins the integrity of the original shows .
Secondly: We love the show, the first three series are the best, but it's always good to get the box set.
