Joshua Hayden does a wonderful job mixing in personal stories and experiences with both current cultural references and classical faith markers to help bring alive and make real the notion of sacred hope. The experiential aspect of the book gives students who think and process in various ways the opportunity to interact with the message of hope. This is not a vanilla book - it is challenging, yet encouraging, and it speaks the truth about the life-changing message of hope to all who are willing to journey with God.
This book is good for both individual and group study. Adults, especially parents and youth workers, would benefit from reading this book as well. I liked the book so much and felt that the message of sacred hope as described in the book was so important that I gave each student in our youth ministry a copy!
Really, this particular book should have been published first in my estimate. It provides an accessible glimpse of Christian hope to students of faith in Jesus. This book is definitely for the student that is seeking God and would like begin taking steps deeper into their faith.
The youth pastor or leader that is looking for a short book to help students develop a Kingdom focused faith language would love the imagery Hayden uses. Words like "signpost" and "imagination" will help students cultivate language for their faith as they make it their own. The words also imply a particular trajectory giving depth to an active faith.
The bonus and main reason I gave it four stars is that the author builds in some creative yet practical spiritual practices for the reader to use in their faith journey. They aren't simply "read this" or "do that" or some creative practice a person wouldn't think to do in their everyday life. They are practices a person can use to engage media as well as ancient texts daily.
Enjoy Sacred Hope!
Hayden invites the reader to listen to songs (Arcade Fire!), watch videos, and imagine hope within different historical contexts to help grasp the reality of Sacred Hope. He presents an authentic approach to living out hope in our world, which will inspire students and adults alike. Well done!
I recommend this book to anyone!
