Book Description

The prequel to the best-selling family saga novel, The Girl in the Lighthouse.

LOVE & WAR, SIN & LIES
Upon the onset of the Civil War, majestic Sutton Hall reigned supreme. Thomas Arrington is one of the wealthiest plantation owners in all of Savannah, Georgia and showers his beautiful only daughter, Amelia, with not only his immense fortune, but his undivided love. Amelia happily shares her life with Hattie, and Mammy Abigail; slaves of the plantation, who live in the Big House as members of the Arrington family. Her unmistakable beauty goes noticed by everyone, especially the married, Perry Montgomery, and the handsome house-guest, Colonial Warren Stone.

Life as Amelia knows it suddenly comes to an end after her beloved father marries stone-cold, widowed aristocrat, Eugenia Norris. Her once innocent, protected, world begins to fall apart as her stepmother loathes everything about her. The smooth running plantation turns upside down during Eugenia’s iron rule, and Amelia is torn away from Hattie, Mammy, and worst of all, her own father. Amelia believes her only hope of escaping the fury of her evil stepmother is in the hands of Patrick-Garrett; the mysterious son of her fathers first marriage, whom Amelia never knew existed.

However, Amelia isn't prepared to face her unspeakable, indecent feelings towards Patrick-Garrett. What happens next will change the course of her life forever, leaving shocking family secrets for generations to come.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible book in many ways. March 5, 2012
By SSB
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Even though I was able to finish the book, I am giving this book one star which is a rating usually reserved for books I cannot read. It starts out okay even though it is a bit "Cinderella". You know, evil stepmother, horrible step-sisters and the handsome prince. The problem is that the handsome prince is her brother. I'm not going any further except to say that the ninny of a narcissistic protagonist behaves not only horribly but also repulsively. There is nothing "sacred" about this book except the occasional blather about the Bible and God. The girl is studying the Bible and sleeping with the man she knows to be her brother. Figure that one out. I know they are not having sex but it hard to believe that two healthy young people, who are in love, are sleeping in the same bed and not having sex. Of course, that eventually happens.

This mess reads more like a fantasy than a whatever it is supposed to be. The book is rife with run-on sentences, sentence fragments and very strange usage of words. For example, I would never refer to an English accent as a "drawl". Was she writing with a thesaurus in her hand and just picking words at random?

After the initial Cinderella sequence the novel degenerates into terrible prose and a frenzied series of events that are difficult to follow and make no sense. Additionally, there are many historical inaccuracies, not the least of which is that c-sections were not performed until 1881. Since this is the Civil War era, the war was over in 1865, around 20 years too early for the procedure. Another would be sending the French governess to England on a ship to obtain the bodies of the step-sisters who died of the plague or cholera or something dire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series April 26, 2015

Loved this series. This particular book is a prequel and going back to the life of Amelia (Lillian's mother) as a child and explains why Amelia and Patrick-Garret were so secretive. A great series which details the lives of all characters and does not leave you hanging and wondering what happened to them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Story not as advertised. July 4, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story started out holding my interest. an old South story. Blacks and whites living together as family but then it got creepy for me. I will not give the story away but the tale turned nasty as far as I was concerned.

4.0 out of 5 stars reminds me of V.C. Andrews.... October 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really liked this series. It's old school Flowers in the Attic type writing and that appealed to me. It's not "GREAT LITERATURE" but it's the perfect type of late night fluff or pool side reading that a busy mommy like me just sometimes craves! Loved the trilogy and have recommended to several of my friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad September 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A pretty decent novel although the author sometimes went overboard with extra details. Set during the Civil War, it is a mixture of "flowers in the attic" and "gone with the wind" as another reviewer pointed out. Beautiful lonely girl? check. Evil, mean step mother? check. Long lost relative who falls for half sister? check. A campy read but sure to peak anyone's interested if he or she is a fan of V.C. Andrews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sacred Intentions November 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Sacred Intentions (Arrington, #3/Prequel) Roxane Tepford Sanford

Set during the Civil War, this is the story of Amelia Arrington. Beautiful daughter of the wealthy Plantation owner Thomas Arrington. Life is perfect for Amelia at Sutton Hall, with her (slave) Nanny Mammy, and her daughter Hattie. Although Hattie is a "Negro-Slave" she is Amelias best friend and "Sister". Thomas is not the average slave owner, he treats his slaves as family, which seems normal to Amelia.

Then the war gets intense, and things begin to change. Eugenia moves in with her two daughters. Eugenia is jealous of her stepdaughter Amelia and treats her poorly, she does not hide her hatred for the beautiful Arrington girl. Once Thomas goes off to war things get worse at Sutton Hall.

Now blossoming into a beautiful woman, Amelia has many suitors, including the super wealth Perry Montgomery and the family house guest Warren Stone. Amelia is interested in one man, whom she will never have. This sparks more animosity from Eugina, and the torturous cruel treatment from Eugina gets worse. Amelia knows she must flee Sutton Hall, she sees her father for what he really is, not the "Hero" she made him out to be.

The only hope for escape from the Hell that Eugina has made into Sutton Hall, seems to be from the forbidden and mysterious Patrick-Garret, the stranger whom Amelia finds to be her half brother. Will he be able to save her from her tormented life in Sutton Hall?

Page turning , all-night read. Sacred intentions is the Prequel to The Girl in the Lighthouse/All that is beautiful Also great as a stand alone, filled with love, loss, family secrets and betrayal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flowers in the Attic meets Gone with the Wind August 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This author has done a fabulous job of recreating the world of V.C. Andrews. Anyone familiar with Ms. Andrew's style knows that she is fond of injecting incest into her storylines. It never stopped me from enjoying them and this book is no exception. It is very well written, concise and easy to follow. The protagonist was very likable and the events were suspensful enough to hold my interest and attention throughout. I recommend this book. If you enjoyed the works of V.C. Andrews, you will not be disappointed.
