The book is divided into ten sections, each with a brief introduction. Each of the featured sites includes an attractive photo, background and highlight information (eg. the best time to go), and associated websites for more information.
A few of the photos are disappointing - eg. Notre-Dame Cathedral is depicted by a close-up of two gargoyles, rather than the entire edifice. Regardless, the book will definitely motivate readers to make their own pilgrimages.
Spend captivating hours alone, passing time, or with friends, fantasizing about where/how to go to next !!
p24:Ten Wells and Springs:Wells and springs have long been associated with healing-- as well as sacrifice
Ch4:Majestic Ruins~ Khmer ruins in Cambodia; Somapura Mahavihara in Bangladesh; England's medieval Rievaulx Abbey.
Shrines, convents, pilgrimmages, festivals, memorials -- Feeling spiritual? Need a spiritual escape? This book's got it!!
Just perusing the various intriguing photos is inspiring in itself, even a mini retreat :)
Extremely well organized, easy to read, & especially to locate points of interest.
I was able to visit a Mayan underground river in Belize this past fall, that had been restored by National Geographic, so I know that they put a lot of money towards restoring historical sites for all of us to enjoy. I am looking forward to being able to see a lot of these places in person!!
I couldn't give this the fourth star because my personal favorite of the series is the drives of a lifetime. Hands down national geographic has done a stellar job with this series of books. This book is one of the most engaging coffee table perusing books I have.
