A murder mystery with a sick twist
Verified purchase
This very good murder mystery stars Radha Mitchell and Ian McElhinney. It is a good quality mystery-horror movie.

Radha is an American doctor practicing in the British Isles. She has problems of her own but gets involved in a strange murder mystery. Like any heroine, she refuses to give up. She finds a preserved corpse buried in her backyard. The underground peat deposit prevented the body from decomposing. The corpse was clearly a victim of murder. But is the body as old as the local police are saying or is it a more recent crime? Peat has a way of preserving human remains. The police are saying this body has been dead for hundreds of years. In which case, no further investigation is required.

I won't spoil it for you. Give this movie a chance. The ending will surprise and shock you.

Good thriller

It was overall a good film. More of a thriller then a horror film. It was a lot better than I expected it would be.

SACRIFICE is a film adaptation of S.J. Bolton's novel of the same name. In the film adaptation, the protagonist role of ob-gyn Tora Hamilton is played by Radha Mitchell. Tora, who has suffered a miscarriage, finds herself relocating with her husband Duncan (Rupert Graves) from New York to her husband's hometown on Shetland. Tora's father-in-law, who seems very much the squire of the place gets Tora a job at the local hospital, and even goes as far as to fast-track the couple's adoption of a soon-to-be-born baby at a high-tech, reclusive medical facility that just seems to be a glammed up version of a baby farm.

Things start to get strange when Tora, whilst trying to bury her dead horse, stumbles upon a body buried in the peat on her land. The local coroner dismisses the body as that of a centuries-dead woman, but Tora's medical research uncovers the fact that the body is only several years' old and suffered a brutal death by way of having her heart ripped out of her body whilst still alive, and a couple of days after birthing a baby. Her attempts to help with the police investigation is met with resistance, except for DC Dana Tulloch who proves to be a good ally. As the pair keeps digging deeper into the case, they uncover some startling and very dark secrets to do with some of the island's inhabitants, involving the inexplicable disappearances of other women over the years.

Not to give too much away, the story takes a very sinister turn and is highly atmospheric, with suspenseful moments that kept the story moving forward in an engaging manner. I enjoyed the inclusion of island folklore to do with mythical creatures. In comparing the book with the film, I felt the film left out a lot of details which were in the novel - details that credibly explained the motivations of some of the islanders and the secret rituals they practiced which the film didn't really delve into. It would have made the film much more engaging. As it is, the film is interesting and if you like creepy and suspenseful murder mysteries with an element of Gothic horror, then this should do nicely.

The movie I'd been craving!
Verified purchase
First of all, this movie was not made in 2011 and does not feature Cuba Gooding Jr., although it shares its name with a movie that does. This movie is exactly what I was craving - good acting, thrilling plot, twists, elements of a cult, the paranormal and ritual sacrifice. And all this based on a topic I'd never heard of - no old rehashes of Pagan occultism, aliens, ghosts, etc. Plus, I loved that it was directed by a woman, based on a novel by a woman and features two strong female leads out to fight the patriarchy.

Beautifully shot, Sacrifice is reminiscent of the True Detective, Conspiracy, Top of the Lake and The Killing in its imagery, themes and story-telling. I'm a fan of movies including Primer, Sunshine, Upstream Color, Mr. Brooks, Se7en, The Signal, as well as the afore-mentioned television shows. If you're into bizarre, fast-paced, unfolding thrillers, this one's for you. The director and writer give us just enough information to let us guess what's going to happen next before hitting us with the next surprise.

Silly rip off of rosemary's baby an equally ridiculous film from roman polanski. Too bad the great and beautiful actress Radha Mitchell has to waste her talents in this silly garbage.
