Ive been actively using these since late may, and despite mostly riding weekends, taking care of the leather and not overloading them they are already loosing their shape, still think they are great looking bags for my vulcan 2000 but gonna go replace them with hard bags next season. I wrongly believed this were rigid mount they are not, and im not a fan of throwever bags after this experience.
So i carry in one bag, a hoody or vest and my charger, in the other i carry mouthwash, toithbrush, extra t shirt, sanitizer, etc, very light stuff, yet the lock clasps have come spart, the bags are warped(not from heat) and the zipper is broke. I take could care of my bike so this shouldnt be happening, definately avoiding saddleman products in the future.
Since the lid on top of the bags has such a tall lip, you are limited to how low you can get the bags since the mounting posts will be in the way of the lid when you close them. It's not a huge deal and they aren't "too high". The top of my bags are in line horizontally with the bottom of the passenger seat so that's ok. I would just personally like them a couple of inches lower. I don't like having a large gap between the bottom of the bags and the exhaust but that's just my preference. I think Saddlemen would be smart to maybe make the inner lip on the lid maybe a little bit shorter. Or maybe make a rounded cut-out where most saddlebag supports might be located.
Be aware that the OEM Yamaha supports are slanted and your bags won't be plumb vertically when you look at them from the rear. I assume the idea is that they can bend in a little bit when loaded. This isn't a comment on the bags but something to be aware of if using the Yamaha supports. You could of course let the tops of the bags loose with the yoke but then they would probably flop around too much in the wind.
These are a great deal on some great looking bags! It would be nice if they were leather and Made in the USA but it seems like they are a great value. I'll be updating my review once I get some good riding time in this summer.
lastly the yoke system mounts to the bags with zippers. the crimp on the slide in part of the zipper failed and the bags came sliding back on the highway, almost lost them, if you buy these bags YOU MUST LOCK THE ZIPPER TO THE D RING. the instructions say it's so people can't unzip them n walk off with them, but it's also the only thing that kept me from dragging my bags down the highway when that zipper failed.
overall they just don't feel like $200 bags, just big and cheap bags. i'm looking into hard mounting them because the yoke is absolutely awful.sadly that will mean i need new brackets, that will cost me even more money.
After 3 years, these things are absolutely toast. The stitching is failing, materials are separating, they've never not let water in. I did end up having to hard mount them. They're fading from the sun, they warped, the top and those stupid spinning locks are always coming undone and flopping in the wind.
I'm really not sure what I'm going to replace them with, because there's not much out there as big as these, but I just can't see me buying these again since most of my complaints aren't due to them being 3 years old. The locks never held the bags closed even new, they were always cheaply constructed, and they always let water in.
My only concern (and reason for 4 stars) is the fact the bags are not as rigid as I had hoped they would be. Since I am bolting them on with a SIMPLY bracket, I have had to reinforce them with a piece of plexi-glass on the inside of the bag. This seems to do the trick. If you are going to use them as throw-overs, they are great just the way they are. Another reviewer mentioned the way the bags open getting in the way with the seat. The inside lip of the bag had to be modified slightly to fit with the bracket. It could have gone on without the mod but then the height of the bag wouldn't have looked as good with the bike. Everything considered, this is a great set of bags especially for the amazing price!
