I hesitated over this one because it was really out of my wheelhouse. I know very little about the time and place in which this book is set. In the end, it was exactly what I expected…unexpected.
What I loved: Adventure! There is danger around every corner. Just when you thought the story was going one way, it would take a new twist. The romance was unusual and developed very differently than most romances, which kept me on the edge of my seat. I like slightly quirky stories, so I played along. Traditional romance readers should be prepared for things not to go exactly as expected.
Drawbacks: Because this story was so quirky, I really felt I needed a better grounding in historical context to know if it worked for the period. I can’t comment on historical accuracy at all.
Overall, an interesting read. This is currently my favorite Rix story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Don't look for achingly beautiful love scenes either. Although Rix heats up the pages towards the last half of the book, her romance scenes are unpredictable with their pragmatic and instructional progression rather than your typical steamy romance.
The lush setting and the supporting players, especially the monkey and lion, make this a page turner and light read, easily conquered in a weekend or a dedicated day of reading.
I found the book a fast read with lots of action, both in the jungle and under the mosquito netting in the dark of night. A young Texan, little Miss Gafford starts off innocent, but don't let that fool you; she's full of grit and fire and eventually figures out exactly what she wants.
