From the Manufacturer
Play is the essential joy of childhood. Through play children learn about themselves, their environment and the larger world. At Safari Ltd. We design toys that assist the joy of play. In a highly technical world, the most endangered species is the imagination. Perhaps we should spell that with a capital "I". Without imagination, the individual loses the creative spark. We intend to never let that happen. We hope your child will enjoy many hours of creative play with this hand painted Safarilogy The Solar System.

Here is a note on the size: The sun has a 1 1/8" diameter. Mercury, the smallest planet, is the size of a green pea (1/4" diameter). Earth and Venus are 1/2" diameter. Mars is 3/8" across. Jupiter, the largest planet, is just shy of a 1" diameter (about the size of .25 quarter.) Saturn with rings is 1.5" across. Uranus and Neptune are the size of a marble (about 5/8" across). This set is probably better for a display or science project than a toy.
My 3.5 year-old son, who loves the planets, has taken a liking to this petite set over his larger sets. The only drawback is trying to find itty-bitty Mercury in the shag carpet or a fold of a blanket.
PS - Mercury is a gray planet so that's okay. (see review below.)
It was received with an outburst of enthusiasm and made this grandpa very happy to witness this. I was also pleased to see that he quickly noticed that there were eight planets, instead of the nine that he expected. He had picked up on that somewhere, either through a book or perhaps a TV show. Scary smart this one is, then we had to explain why there is no Pluto. That’s not as easy as it may sound.
And to my profound relief it stated that this product is phthalate-free. No, I have no idea what that is either. Sounds pretty important though. I sure hope no phthalate was injured in the production.
We plan to make a mobile from this. I think that is pretty cool because it will always be within sight and not crammed into a toy box to be seen only once in a while. It’s also something I wish I had when I was a kid.
