This comb is truly amazing. It won't do everything for you, though, and if you haven't brushed the tangles (not mats) out first, you will just end up ripping your dog's hair out. First, brush the dog with a normal slicker brush. I do all of these steps by area of the dog, by the way, so I'm not brushing the whole dog all at once, just one leg first, for example, then his head, then another leg. The first step gets out the superficial tangles. Second, comb the dog, in the direction of the hair, with the de-matting comb. Use a normal combing motion so as not to hurt the dog. Third, comb the dog using a rake comb (not a razored rake), also in the direction of the hair. This is also good between the toes. This gets out the tufts of mats that you just broke up with the razor comb and goes all the way to the skin to detangle everything. Finally, go back and brush the dog again with a normal slicker brush or with a comb on the face and ears. This picks up all of the loose hairs left behind by the razor comb that would just end up creating new tangles. You really don't need a hundred dollars worth of fancy french poodle brushes. You just need three cheap tools to get a great looking, happy, mat-free dog.
It's worth noting that there is no way to sharpen the blades because they are slightly serrated. But for nine dollars, I'm just going to buy a second one (I've had this one for 2 years).
I end up purchasing this product and the Safari Mat Remover (with the small curved rakes). When I bought them I didn't know the difference and figured I would try one; if it worked I would return the other. I also bought a Lil Pals Slicker brush and a Lil Pals Double Sided Comb.
This DeMatting Comb and the Mat Remover work perfectly together! I use this product to break up large matts. It cuts through large matts, creating smaller manageable matts which I use Mat Remover. Then I finish off with a wire comb. If I hold the hair close to the skin, it is an easy painless process.
Now, When my dog has a grooming appointment, I take care of all the knots and matts because I know my hand is softer than the groomers. I love this product. My little Ginger loves this product.
Believe it or not, a dogs coat actually acts as its own protection against the summer heat. When grooming your dog in the summer, don't cut his hair very short, as you will actually be taking away this layer of protection.
Now to get to the actual review of the comb:
Quality - very nice construction. Feels like it will last a while. I don't know how you can sharpen the blades, but the handle is solid and I feel like at this price...you'd just buy a new one instead of trying to sharpen the blades when the comb has outworn it's effectiveness.
Design - The "comb" is made up of serrated blades that are designed to scoop up knots between the dog's skin and fur. The handle can be comfortable held close to the comb so that you can have precise control over this tool. Don't worry...the comb is designed so that you can safely use this to cut through knots and avoid hurting or cutting your dog. It's hard to explain, but for this price (under $10) it's worth seeing the comb just to make grooming your dog easier.
My gf and I left our comb back at her parent's house while we were on vacation and after 2 days without it, I'm already buying another one because I can't live without it. If your dog easily gets knots, buy this comb!!!
