I saw a few possibilities, but none were what I expected. Highly disappointed.
Overall a good read and fast paced, the ending was the reason for 4 star rating
After first reading Liar and now Safe with Me, I really have to wonder about K.L. Slater. Her mind is undoubtedly warped. To be able to conceive of and pen such depraved tales takes more psychological configurations than I’d imagine exists in the minds of half of the patients in mental institutions in Britain.
Anna Clarke is mentally unstable. She seems to be stuck at around the age of 13 or 14, which makes sense because that was her age when a very traumatic event changed her life forever.
When, as an adult, Anna witnesses an accident and stops to help, she realizes that the woman, whom she learns is now going by the name Amanda Danson is the woman who caused her suffering 13 years before. Anna knows she must see justice done and make sure that this time Amanda pays for her crime. In the meantime, Anna becomes obsessed with the accident victim, Liam, his well-being and the relationship she believes is forming between them.
Anna is delusional at best and with the mindset of an illogical 14-year-old believes that she can explain away anything she has done wrong and that everyone else is at fault. Even while forcing herself into the lives of Liam and his grandmother, Ivy, Anna comments “Some people assume a shared situation authorizes them to be immediately familiar.” She is scornful of others who feel this way, yet she is completely blind to the fact that she is the one who is doing just that to Liam and Ivy.
Also, anyone who pays her any attention, other than Liam, is seen to be obtrusive and untrustworthy and, in Anna’s mind, those people only want to bring ill-will to her. When in reality that is her behavior, not the intentions of others.
When I first began listening to/reading Safe with Me, I really didn’t like Anna at all, but I had to continue because it is sort of like a series of train wrecks – you can’t stop watching (or, in this case, reading) because you want to find out just how bad the situation will become. That is when Slater has you hooked and drawn completely in. There is no way you can stop reading. You have to know just how crazy Anna really is.
This is a really, really well-planned and well-executed story of mental illness wrapped up in a psychological thriller full of twists and turns. I highly recommend this in both print and audio versions. I switched back and forth on this one.
Lucy Price-Lewis does an amazing job with the voices and characterizations of Anna, Amanda, Mrs. Peat (Anna’s neighbor), and the other, unnamed character. So much so that you know without a doubt whose point of view is shared with each chapter. And Slater writes in such a way that you never see the twists before they have thrown you for a loop.

I like the author’s writing style. I like the way she jumps write into the plot and doesn’t waste the readers time with unnecessary purple prose or setting. She grabs our attention right away and once we’re hooked she uses flashback to give us the backstory we need to clue us in to what happened to Anna’s brother, the abuse, his death, Anna’s relationship with her neighbor, and more. We learn just what we need and nothing more. I could go into a lot more here, but it would give away too much of the story and the plot twists so I will have to leave
it vague and leave you guessing, which is what the author does. Suffice it to say, the author is an expert at character arc and characterization. I was surprised to learn this was her debut novel.
She also does a kick ass job of building suspense. I read this book in one night. She kept me on the edge of my seat. Kept me guessing. Even after I figured it all out, I was still anxious and on edge and that’s the sign of a good thriller writer — someone who knows how to pace their writing and keep the reader in suspense. This author has a new fan. I’m eager to read all of her novels and have already bought two more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves suspense, thrillers, especially psychological thrillers and anyone who likes unreliable narrators. If you like to keep guessing who the good guy/bad guy is or what their motivation is or whether or not the narrator is telling you the truth or the entire truth — you want to read this book!!!!! You will love it! Which character should you Believe?

When you meet Anna she has witnessed a collision between a car and a motorbike. When the driver of the car gets out Anna is absolutely sure that the person is the one she holds responsible for turning her whole life upside down when she was a child. In her pursuit to bring this person to the justice she believes did not happen she befriends the bike rider and tries to make herself indispensable to both him and his elderly grandmother that he lives with. In doing this she starts to neglect her job which then puts her in the firing line of her employers who start investigating her.
I have to say this is where it all got a bit much for me as it just seemed to be very busy and full of characters that did nothing to enhance the book. The story goes between the events of 13 years ago and the present so that the reader understands what is driving Anna in her quest for revenge. In this quest however it does make her blind to those around her who may not have her best interests at heart.
It was not until the end of the book that the prologue made any sense to me as what I thought it referred to it didn’t.
With the exception of Carla, who I did feel sorry for especially at the end when you find out the truth, I could not really warm to any of the characters. At first I did feel sorry for Anna and what she had gone through in the past but to be honest by the end of the book I just thought she was slightly unhinged.
My other issue with the book was that in spending so much time setting the scene in both the past and present the end just seemed all a bit rushed with only one person being punished for what they had done.
I know that a lot of readers really loved this book, and while I didn’t hate it I can’t say that I absolutely loved it either. For me it was just ok. But that in itself is the joy of books…not everyone will like the same thing. Although it was not my most favourite read I will admit that the characters were well written and at no point did I think that I would not finish it as I did want to see what would happen to Anna, Carla and Liam.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for the copy of this book in return for my review

The protagonist, Anna, seems completely deranged and psychotic. You know that something terrible has happened to her thirteen years ago and then when she witnesses an accident, everything in her life starts to spiral out of control once more. She begins to become more and more unhinged as the story develops and you are unsure what to believe or whether she really is an innocent party. As some of the other previous reviewers have said she isn’t a very likeable character, but I don’t think she is supposed to be. I guess her erratic behaviour is supposed to make us question and be sceptical of her. Everything she did was just making her life worse, I just wanted to say calm down, take a deep breath and work through things methodically but she was skipping from one thing to the next, and my OCD was going crazy!
The author certainly keeps us on our toes with the characters as you think things are one way and then a few chapters later, something is revealed, which shatters all the preconceptions that you had. I liked that you were privy to many of the character’s voices, but I would have liked to have been in Ivy and Liam’s heads to have known what they thought of Anna’s pushiness and her involvement in everything.
Even though there is plenty of intrigue and suspicion throughout the book, it is quite a slow-moving plot. It did feel somewhat ploddy at times, and I didn’t move through it as quickly as I have with some of K.L. Slater’s other books. For this reason, it is only getting four instead of five stars.
Overall, though, I was glad I chose this to start my year off; hopefully, this is a sign of the great books I will be reading this year!

As the story progressed though, I found myself getting irritated with Anna. Her obsession for revenge became grating, her behaviour with Liam controlling, almost stalker like. She blames Carla (a woman she witnesses causing his road accident) for the ruin of her life, a tragedy involving her little brother. This part of the story I found upsetting, since the boy was obviously suffering and Carla (as school counsellor) appeared to be the only adult who tried reaching out to him - but due to one thoughtless action failed him terribly.
At 75% in, I was engrossed but then it got a bit silly with so much happening at once, too many twists and turns rising to a tense climax and then.... SPLAT. The end fell flat on its face, with little resolved, apart from Anna being slightly less unhinged and with a few more friends. Few books have left me feeling this flat.
