I bought this book a while back when I saw it was the first in long line of stories about the Colby Agency. It was also my first time reading anything by Debra Webb and I really liked her writing. I've been in a reading slump for close to two weeks now and finally found a book I was able to finish! The entire story was fast paced, engaging, and full of adventure. Both Raine and Kate were well fleshed out and felt very vivid and life-like to me too. He was defnitely an alpha male and very dominant at times, but she was feisty and strong and stood toe to toe with him on more than one occasion. Their relationship was pretty intense and had plenty of passion that included a couple of steamy love scenes. In the end I thought it had a wonderful blend of both romance and suspense and even though there were no major surprises, there were quite a few twists and turns along the way. Overall I really enjoyed it wouldn't hesitate to read another book by this author anytime and am actually looking forward to it =)
SAFE BY HIS SIDE was originally published in 2000 and is approximately 256 pages long. I read the kindle version which ended at 100% and location 3465 on my kindle device.
Kate wanted to be a cop, but because of a heart defect she failed the physical. Instead she became a private investigator. Her mission was to find Raine, and bring him in. He had worked for the FBI, CIA, and other agencies in deep cover. He was the best in the business. The government needed to know if he had turned. Kate found her man by pure accident. She had a wreck right before getting to his house. Afterwards she stumbled to his house to use his phone. She had amnesia and couldn't remember anything. He took her in, and took care of her.
Very bad people were after Raine, and he took Kate with him as they dodged bullets, and hid within the shadows. The adrenalin that fueled their need to stay alive, also fueled their passion for one another. Their connection to one another was intense. They both tried to fight against it, not understanding how they could be so attracted to one person.
This is by far one of the BEST books I have read!
Early on in the book I knew this wasn't worth my money but I continued with a lot of skipping.
First, and the biggest issue for me, was the heroine' s personality. Ugh, I just wanted to smack her. She complained, whined and annoyed throughout the entire book. The Hero saved her life many times and was really her only hope of surviving, especially since she has amnesia and can't recall friends, family members and colleagues. So in return she whams him in the jewels which drops him on his butt and flees. What is she fleeing to when you have nobody and why flee the guy saving your life over and over? TSTL.
Even at the end of the book she again does the one thing the hero tells her not to do. And again she gets kidnapped to where the hero has to save her.
It made no sense that the hero fell in love with her. They barely had a minute of enjoying each other. The sex was good and I would have enjoyed reading about it if I had cared about them staying together.
I had a slight issue with the hero. He was supposed to be this remarkable agent. Got every award the government can hand out, it says in the book. He had been hiding and avoiding agents because he was so good at it. Then why didn't he have an escape plan when they caught up with him. He had nothing.
There were other issues but I just didn't care. I couldn't get past her stupidity and annoying personality.
This was the first book I read from this author and I don't think I will read another of hers.
I have to remember not to trust great reviews. I think they are sometimes given from friends and family. Especially when it doesn't say it was a verified Amazon purchase.
