Safeguard: An Electoral College Story

 (427)5.51 h 16 min202013+
This timely and urgent new public affairs documentary examines the U.S. electoral college system. The film remains non-partisan as it asks the questions: How does it work? What happens if we change the rules? Is democracy just "two wolves and a lamb voting on what's for dinner?" Or can a democratic system be designed to protect minority rights? Does our Constitution strike the right balance?

Propaganda

A true disappointment. A facile attempt to explain the electoral college, which is hardly the main focus (it takes over ten minutes before the term is even mentioned). Instead, the electoral college seems to serve as a point of departure for explaining broader concepts like the separation of powers and federalism on a middle school level while providing singular views. Hearing over and over again how the two-party system is an inherent asset to our democracy is one thing, but to juxtapose clips echoing this opinion with visuals of Bernie Sanders (a candidate for one OF the two parties, if one need be reminded) and looters as one is told how radical factions could take hold of an America that abandons the two-party system is irresponsible and far from something I care to watch. For all the ostensible care to reference history, there was a clear omission of the many like Washington and Adams who feared in the extreme partisanship resulting from having only two parties.

tl;dr Don't waste your time

Something definitely needed in schools

I learned very little if anything about the Electoral College in high school. Maybe that is why I called for its removal early on. I mean, it sounds "fair" when people say shouldn't the majority choose the president? Well, I have since learned a lot more and learned that the majority do choose the president...just a combination of a majority of people and a majority of states.
This movie does a good job of an introductory explanation of Federalism which is necessary to know why the founders set up the EC in the first place. It then dutifully describes the many areas where the EC has helped serve as a check to the emotions of human nature and preserve the rights of minorities, not just of race, but any type of minority. It finishes of the pitfalls we face should we forego the EC.
The old saying of "don't tear down a fence until you know why it was put there" applies. To tear it down because it doesn't appear to be serving a purpose is never a good reason because once you take it down without knowing the full story, it may be too late to put it back up.

Propaganda -- Total Garbage
Verified purchase
Total nonsense, highly partisan right-wing drivel. Exploits emotional responses to moving visual images and soft music that have nothing to do with the arguments being made. Conclusions reached do not follow from the information provided. LIttle factual information is presented and gross distortions abound; provides opinions couched as reasoned conclusions.

For example, never mentions that at the time the constitution and electoral college was created only white, male, landowners were represented and accepted, but the argument is made that the electoral college is the best way to insure minorities (not just minority opinions) would not be shut out of the democratic process. Really? Really?

Do some research, who are the speakers/presenters and what organizations do they represent. Are they mainstream thinkers or far-right outliers who promote propaganda. Heritage Foundation, Public Interest Legal Foundation, Federalist Society, etc. Don't fall for this garbage.

This stellar piece of propaganda was timed to be released now to bolster and support Trump in the upcoming election.

Why not mob rule?
Verified purchase
This documentary explains very well and in detail why we have the current election systems in place and why scrapping it would be a disaster for our nation. It is a lasting testament to the strengths that we have as a republic to come together every four years and decide our fate as one nation, not turning to the mob rule mentality (popular vote) to elect our representatives.

How our system of government works, why, and how we ALL benefit.
Verified purchase
This is a clear and cogent presentation of the reasons why we must preserve the Electoral College. It works expressly to guaranty the relatively smooth functioning of the process for electing the President of the United State by assuring the fair representation of the people who vote. Every American should watch this video to better understand and appreciate the wisdom of this country's founders and how the Electoral College has preserved the union. Abandoning the Electoral College would disenfranchise millions of Americans and assure the election of the President by a minor segment of voters. I am more convinced than ever that the Electoral College serves us all by preserving republican democracy in the United States of America.

A must watch for all ages!

A deep dive into the reasons and relevance of and for the Electoral College, especially in today's political climate. Very well done piece, filled with many historical examples on how the Electoral College has shaped our country for the better and how removing it would be disastrous. It is filled with diverse political historical scholars, all of whom agree with the importance of the Electoral College.

Conservative propaganda
Verified purchase
This is thinly veiled conservative propaganda defending the electoral college, likely because the electoral college system strongly favors the Republican Party. The individuals that are interviewed are almost exclusively from conservative organizations (Heritage Foundation, Public Interest Legal Foundation, etc, etc). The case is argued with an abundance of patriotic phrasing and historical photos, but ultimately lacks a rational foundation. It consists almost entirely of a repeated logical fallacy: the electoral college is an example of some concept, in other circumstances this concept is useful, therefore the electoral college is useful. This is false. Proof: getting hit in the head with a hammer is painful, sometimes pain is useful for avoiding things that can do us harm, getting hit in the head with a hammer is NOT useful.
