Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth - Ant, Bedbug and Crawling Insect Killer
The Safer Brand Approach to Insect Control
Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth is a stain-free, powder-like product specifically lethal to crawling insects. Made with diatomaceous earth, this versatile and dual-action formula quickly kills a wide range of insects by touch and by ingestion. Best of all, Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency, and when applied as directed won’t have adverse effects on humans or the environment.
Apply confidently indoors or outdoors: simply sprinkle the non-staining powder across infested areas, making sure to cover every crack and crevice where insects may travel. It will begin to work in just minutes and completely kill crawling insects in as little as 48 hours.
Microscopic Particles Kill From the Inside and Out
Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) is composed of crushed fossilized fresh-water algae - aka diatoms. While soft to a human’s touch, D.E. particles have microscopic, razor-sharp edges that effectively penetrate and cut open an insect’s delicate exoskeleton to dehydrate it from the outside. D.E. is also very dry and porous, so when an insect ingests the powder, it quickly absorbs the insect’s moisture and dries it out from the inside. As long as the product remains dry, it remains effective. What’s more, because of how Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth works, insects cannot grow immune to it - you’ll never have to switch insect-killers again.

This product poses some questions. I have sprinkled it only around the trash area once when i saw enough ants to make it worth it and it was interesting to watch all the ants starts to shake and then when I checked later they weren't there. However, since I only treated one area, it wasn't a surprise that there were still ants appearing periodically.
Problem is this thing called silicosis. As a ceramic artist, I know enough to make sure I am not breathing in silica dust, and there is silica in this product, and it is a fine, fine powder.
Then there is the question about food grade v. this stuff which is pesticide. There is a difference between crystalline and amorphous DE, with the crystalline being the kind that is most harmful on inhalation.
I am suspect about whether it is a good idea to be dusting this stuff all over the house, under furniture and have heard that the effects of it are eliminated if it is wet. Being that it isn't good for inhalation, I would hesitate to use it on the exterior of animals, but it is my understanding that ingestion doesn't pose as much a problem, if any.
There is info from the CDC about amorphous DE and silicosis online at the American Lung Association, and Amazon won't permit me to provide links to informational sites because it might be spam or something.
Because it is so fine, I wonder if covering the nose and mouth with a wet towel and using gloves and long sleeves would be enough to make it safe to sprinkle in places where a dog's nose wouldn't investigate. Another question is eliminating it once the need is no longer there.
Bottom line is that I believe this is an awesome pesticide alternative, but cover the respiratory with a wet cloth to diminish problems of inhalation and use some gloves and maybe do some homework and use reliable sources.
I should have known that the Safer brand would have what I needed at a reasonable price (I saw some incredibly unreasonable prices from other vendors). I sprinkled the DE generously around the flea hot-spots, moderately around the entire house, and gently massaged it into my cats' coats. It took about a week to see obvious results, about 10 days to see no live fleas. There have been no new hatches of fleas, as the DE prevents eggs from hatching. These days, I keep a little bit spread around where the cats hang out, vacuum weekly, then sprinkle out a bit more. NO new fleas!!! Obviously, I recommend this product whole-heartedly. It's a great flea-prevention tool AND a great eradication tool. And the 4-lb. bag should last you for years.
As far as it being healthy, I have asthma and I'm perfectly fine. For obvious reasons you definitely don't want to breathe in or ingest it which is why I recommend wearing a dust mask and airing out the room after dusting.
