Our baby got his first fever and this Safety 1st thermometer is what we used. I'd say it's pretty accurate and when your little one is sick, you really want to keep track of their temperature just to be sure it's not too high. Now 100.4 or higher is considered a fever.
What I do is this: Wipe the tip with alcohol and smother a tiny bit of vaseline on the tip. Turn it on by pressing the button once. It shall say "L", then insert it into the baby's butt. The temperature will rise at this point. Wait until you hear a beeping sound. The waiting usually takes about 5 seconds.
The only thing I'd like to see different is if the temperature reading could take place faster, especially when your baby is fussy with a thermometer up his butt, even 5 seconds is too long.
Whether you are using this for a pet or child, I would suggest purchasing the Safety 1st protective covers for hygiene purposes.
