If our doorknob were round, I could use a round doorknob cover that has worked well for us on interior doors in the past. However, our doorknob is a lever-type (and I wouldn't be allowed to switch knobs!). All the lever covers I've investigated either require damaging the door or have terrible reviews. We use a different product, the Door Monkey, on interior doors but it doesn't fit on the outside door and leaves the door a bit ajar.
So, I was really happy when I saw this new product! It came up in a websearch I did, but I bought it at the local big box baby store for a very reasonable price. However, I was skeptical because so many safety items have horrible reviews. Also, I was initially confused about whether it required installing screws into the door. It does not.
All you have to do is loosen the screws on the deadbolt itself so that you can slip a metal plate behind it. Then you tighten the deadbolt back to normal and install the cover on top of it. The screws that secure the cover to the plate do not even touch the door.
There are two buttons that you have to simultaneously grasp to twist the deadbolt lever open or closed. I can't imagine my two-year old successfully turning it but it is not hard for me. My four-year old probably couldn't do it either, at least not without direct training, but I bet my six-year old could.Read more ›
Installed easily enough, though I had to adjust the back plate to be slightly off-center since the deadbolt handle was rubbing inside.
When securing the cover to the plate, some part of the cover's turning mechanism must be hitting the deadbolt cover, since if I simply tighten the screws down very lightly, it is no longer able to turn. It did this when the deadbolt was centered as well as off-center, so I simply settled for "lightly tighten, then back off 1/4 turn" on the top screw and while it might rattle a tiny bit if you pull on it, I've advised the wife that it doesn't rattle if you don't pull on it.
Our lock handle has about a 90 degree throw between disengagement and full engagement (including that final "click" as the bolt is properly secured), and the lock handle is longer on the top than the bottom. As a result of that, plus the required off-center placement, we cannot fully engage the deadbolt if we follow their instructions. We have to release the "lower" squeeze grip because it jams too close to the center post. If we don't release it, it runs a high risk of truly jamming, which requires a minute of fiddling around to get the thing unstuck. My admittedly elderly in-laws were unable to work the lock properly after installation.
Several times, the squeeze grips simply jammed (stuck pushed-in, unmovable and unusable), which is annoying, but it might have been related to one or both of the other issues.Read more ›
The ONLY issue that I had (and others will certainly have) is that if your door has a window in it, there may not be enough space to install this with out modification. I was able to trim a 1/2" of material at a diagonal angle from the edge to the rear of the unit. You're not really able to see the modification and there are enough mounting screws that the unit is still structurally sound. I was able to do this with a hack saw and a straight edge and it took me about 30 minutes where installation should normally take 5 minutes. I'd say I'm a pretty handy guy, so keep this in mind if you're going to try it.
All in all, an excellent product.
This product will solve the problem of little people unlocking door and running outside--so it would have received 5 stars if it weren't difficult for everyone else to figure out. My 5 year old learned how to use without issue after about 3 days, so that's helpful. His two year old sister (reason for the purchase) has not figured the product out yet and it's been installed for 3 months. Poor Grandpa still struggles to get out the door and complains loudly each time. Visitors will be hopelessly stuck in your house until you decide it's time for them to leave.
One note--this product won't work on glass doors. For those we just installed a lock on the backyard gate. I think this is probably the best product out there if you want to keep a small child in without making it impossible for bigger kids to leave or for entry from outside.

Works well as long as you don't tighten the screws all the way down. Leave them loose so it doesn't bind up. Read morePublished 10 days ago by Aeroheadcww
This product does not work. My deadbolt works great and is real smooth to work. Once I installed this product it was real hard to operate for both my wife and I. Read morePublished 12 days ago by Mike F.
