Safety Technology International, Inc. - STI 34100 Solar Powered Wireless Driveway Monitor. You can always be assured that the driveway monitor kit will notify you when a vehicle enters or exits your driveway. This small rugged waterproof sensor is easy to install and includes a yard stake. Plug the receiver into any standard electrical wall outlet next to your driveway. When sensor detects a vehicle, it signals the receiver to alert you by chiming and flashing. Effective range of up to 1,000 feet (line of sight) away from the sensor. The driveway sensor uses a patented magnetometer sensor system. Movement of any large metallic (iron or steel) object with a magnetic field causes the sensor to transmit to the receiver. Sensor offers sensitivity options of low, medium, and high. Sensor is solar powered (includes two rechargeable batteries). NOTE: Maximum optimal range for vehicle detection is 12 feet; multiple sensors (purchase the STI model 34101 separately to increase range) may be required for driveways exceeding this width / range. CONTENTS: solar powered sensor, chime receiver, receiver antenna, mounting kit, wall mount, AC adapter, (2) AA NiMH rechargeable batteries, screws. Safety Technology International, Inc. As for the comments regarding the poor instructions???? There is ONE button on this unit. Hold the button down, plug it in, trip the unit by moving the sensor, push the button again. Done! The sensor does not have to be in it's final position to do this. Set-up the unit, then take it down the drive and mount it.
Yes it is plastic, however that does not necessarily translate to cheap. You are paying for the development and technology, which seem to work perfect.
We live in the country, long lonely drive. The product gives us a heads up on any visitors.
Edit: January, 2013
It's winter in Michigan. The unit fails from time to time now. I'm thinking is a power problem with cold batteries and cloudy days. A sunny and warmer day, maybe 30 degrees or so, and it's fine. I added a second sensor about 250 feet from the receiver and this one works every time. I'd remove a star, but solar power in Michigan is really asking a lot.
Interesting note, the second transmitter was a easy to set up as the first. It also produces a different series of tones, so you know which set it off.
Edit: July 2015. Original transmitter has failed. Began giving off false alarms. Happened two years ago and it was the batteries needed to be replaced. Opened it up this time and it had a considerable amount of water inside, batteries corroded. Granted is has been a tremendously wet year. I believe it is the seam at the middle of the unit, seems open some very small amount. I think the seal could be designed a bit better. Anyway, dried out the sender, cleaned up the corrosion and fresh batteries. Works, but still the occasional false alarm.
I like this product a lot, it's general works with little failure. So, after three years I'll order the replacement. As the cost of the replacement is close to $100, I am dropping off one star, but would still recomend.
I had some difficulty at first following the directions which resulted in a call to customer service. I am rather good with technical things, so this upset me. As it turned out, the directions were not clear in stating that during the initial setup, the receiver (the black box) AND the sensor (flying saucer) had to be right next to each other. Once I did the program mode with them together, I was able to take the sensor outside and install it on the post that it came with. No issues! I do not have it in a spot with direct sunlight all day (under a pine tree but the sun shines on the sensor for about 2 hours a day) and I have had no issues. Everything seems to work great.
I have 2 issues (which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5). The first is no volume control. This thing is loud...which is great, unless you have a baby taking a nap. I don't want to turn it on silent mode because I still want to hear when FedEx brings me my amazon order :) but the volume it has built in is LOUD! So a volume setting would be nice. 2nd, I wish it had a counter for how many times a vehicle passed by. For instance, we pull out of our driveway to leave and it sets it off, also when we pull back in. It would be nice to come home to see it display "2" instead of a blinking light, which would let us know we were the only ones to come down our driveway. Or if it said "4" we had a visitor...just would be nice.
I followed the instructions then mounted the device near the end of the driveway on a wood post next to my stone columns.
The device is working so far as promised. I even have the receiver in my Kitchen which is to the rear of the house.
I'll come back later to see how the long term functionality is.
I'd recommend this product. You just have to keep in mind that the quality is cheap but so is the price.
This one was the most easiest and really functional option i could buy. The instructions for this product are not the greatest by any means. It took me a little while to set it up but once i got it set up boom it is working. I have the receiver in my kitchen and the sensor about 700 feet (still testing to see how far it will go)from there. Works as advertised. As far a false positives occurring, which i was worried about, has only happened a cpl times and it took me a little while to figure it out. A large crow was setting it off........The bird would land on it and try and "peck" at it which causes the magnet to move which inturn set it off. This is a good item and what i was looking for. I have had it for a cpl months now and so far so good. I would recommend it for some one who has a long driveway and no way of getting power out there.
