I had bought the first two novellas in the series but then decided to spring for the omnibus since I knew by that point I wanted to finish. The core of the story is the main character's resistance to fulfilling his legacy. Yes, that's been done before, but here it seems fresh, in part because Collins doesn't weigh down his tale with endless backstory or too many characters to keep track of. This omnibus edition is 700 pages, so there's plenty of satisfying dark fantasy here, and secondary plot lines do develop, yet "Saga of the Go-Touched Mage" never drags, and always entertains.
A satisfying and substantial epic that still is quite tight. That's a tough balancing act, and Collins achieved it.
This is Mr. Collins's finest work to date. Take the dive and you just might discover a new favorite author.
