The 4 keys formula for third wave specialty coffee at home:
- Rich, full flavour
- Perfectly balanced taste
- Irresistible body
- Silky, velvety mouthfeel
The 4 keys formula for third wave specialty coffee at home.
1. Rich, full flavour
Full-bodied coffee with rich and complex flavors is created using the right dose of 19-22g of freshly ground beans. This dose allows the coffee to fully express the incredible aroma, intense flavors and distinctive character of the coffee, for a true cafe quality result. Anything less than the optimal dose results in a weak and watery taste experience.
2. Perfectly balanced taste
Sweet, delicious and nuanced flavour notes begin with precise control over water temperature. Digital temperature control (PID) technology precisely controls water temperature for a perfectly balanced coffee extraction, giving you the control and consistency for delicious tasting coffee every time.
3. Irresistible body
An opulent, creamy and caramel-coloured espresso starts with low pressure pre-infusion that soaks the grinds, allowing water to pass evenly through the coffee during the high pressure (9 bar) extraction process, delivered via our 15 bar Italian pump. This results in a rich, sweet and viscous espresso.
4. Silky, velvety mouthfeel
Savour the silky taste and velvety mouthfeel of true microfoam milk. The milk is steamed with pressure that creates thousands of tiny bubbles, enhancing flavour and mouthfeel, while the temperature brings out the milk’s sweetness, exciting your taste buds, for a harmonious blend of rich, sweet milk and syrupy, golden espresso.

The grinder comes with two portafilter holders; one big, one small. The small holder fits the Bambino portafilter, just like my old machine - probably designed for home coffee makers.
Quick start and simple enough instructions to set up the machine.
The main thing that drew me into Sage machines was the milk wands as I could never make a latte or flat white on my old machine, just hot frothy milk (different brand).
The Bambino auto-milk function was a doddle, it took me a couple of coffees and a few YouTube videos but I managed a tiny heart! In 18 months of having my old machine, I never got anywhere near that!
It isn’t a huge machine but this suits me as I don’t have much kitchen space. The water tank is easy to fill and the filter is a great addition as I’m pretty sure the reason my last machine blew up was due to limescale.
All in all a great machine that does exactly what I wanted it to and makes much better coffee than what I had before - soon I’ll be better than my cafe (maybe)!
Right, the important stuff:
How does it look and feel on the kitchen counter? There are prettier machines and, personally, I'd like a bigger one. But, if workspace is limited and you don't need a bigger one, then this is great; it's takes about the same space is a large kettle. Mine is brushed steel and, even after multiple daily use it still looks shiny after two months. The backlights on the buttons are blue/white, and they're pretty. Generally, it feels like a well-made, sturdy, and quality device. So, all good
What does the coffee taste like? I'm not a bean grind and roast expert - like some nerds on here - but you'll get a high street barista-standard taste that I compare to a really good Cafe Nero (not Starbucks or Costa as neither are to my taste). The first cup is AMAZING, but I've never managed to reach those heighst again. Don't know why!
Ease of use - The auto steam wand is a revelation: select your low, medium, high temperature and your foam texture setting, poor in your milk and insert the wand. You can then forget about it until it stops; about 20 second for medium tops. Because I make mugs over cups, I fill use the large of the two filters. Some have complained that it's difficult to create a pour from both spouts; this is easily sorted! Put in the coffee to the filter, press with the tamping thingy, and then, rotate it a couple of times. This will make sure that the coffee is compressed evening. There's a levelling razor, but I can't be bothered with the faff as you'll get to know how much coffee to put it.
Cleaning - Wipe your wand after each use (sniggers like a idiot at this comment) and then return into position. The wand then auto self-cleans, so make sure you have the drip tray in place.
My ONLY gripe with this machine is that the little coffee filter thing get stuck every time I remove the handle. And I mean EVERY TIME. But it doesn't really bother me as it's easily removed, although I could imagine that it could be tricky if you have arthritic fingers. So beware of that bit you have this problem.
All in all, I love it and would recommend if you don't want to spend the extra 200 quid on the larger machine. This is great for us singletons but, if you're making more than one drink at a time, the extra 200 quid might a good investment.
