To upgrade to BenF and get usable microSD card (one that BenF can write to and Windows 7 can read) was as follows for me:
1. Format the 2gb microSD card using sdformatter from sdcard.org (this is a must because Windows 7 will not format it correctly). Do NOT use the DS201 as the card reader to do the format (doing so did not produce a working microSD card). Instead, format the microSD card in a different card reader using sdformatter.
2. Download BenF_3.64APP_3.53LIB_patched_v2.zip and extract BENF_P2.hex on your Windows 7 machine.
3. Connected to your Windows machine with the USB cable , while holding down the "-" (minus) key, turn on the DS201.
4. Copy BENF_P2.hex to the USB drive that will appear (it was DFU V3_29_D drive G: for me).
5. Turn off the DS201 then back on, it should boot to the BenF firmware and you should now have a much better device with a working microSD card that can save waveforms and be readable on your Windows machine. Enjoy!
I found the BenF firmware documentation as "ReadMe BenF V3 Firmware.pdf" in a . It was not included in the above mentioned .zip file.
Below I describe what didn't work, then what did work.
First, let me say how confusing this whole thing was. The Amazon description uses the term "Upgraded," making you think that maybe the firmware already IS upgraded to BenF. And, when you try to find descriptions and photographs of the non-BenF firmware versus the BenF firmware, you can't, or at least I couldn't. When I looked at stuff on youtube, I could barely tell the difference between the original and the BenF firmware. Plus, despite all the descriptions of the original software as "horrible" and "unusable," I had no trouble making it work. It was only the fact that, at bootup, the Nano didn't display the blue "BenF" lettering that I read should be there that convinced me I didn't have it.
Next, let me say that the PROCESS of upgrading firmware is very simple, and well-described in the manual that comes with the Nano. You simply connect the Nano to your computer via the USB cable, and hold down the minus sign key while you turn the Nano on. The Nano then goes into an upgrade-receptive mode where it appears to your computer as a virtual disk drive. The Nano screen even says "please copy Hex or Bin file to the DFU virtual USB disk." Very clear. Then it's just a question of locating and downloading the correct hex file, dragging and dropping onto the virtual disk, shutting off the Nano, and turning it back on. AND, if there's more than one hex file, you can only drag and drop one of them at a time.
There are a number of youtube videos and posts on the http://www.seeedstudio.com/wiki page telling you which files to use. In the end, I got it right by trial and error. I started at the http://www.seeedstudio.com/wiki/DSO_Nano page.
--The Wiki page for the DSO Nano1 says that the firmware is the same as it is for the Nano2.
--The Wiki page for the DSO Nano2 has several sets of instructions. The first one is:
"DSO Nano firmware update methods(App Ver2.4 and below)
1. Download "DfuSe USB Device Firmware Upgrade" and install . On Linux and Mac OS X you cuold use dfu-util(0.5 or newer).
This has a link in it, but the link is broken. I found the app elsewhere on the web, but it's more than simply dragging and dropping hex files onto the Nano. It's installing a program on your computer. I did, but its use was not clear to me, so I backed off."
--The next set of instructions was this:
"DSO Nano firmware update methods(App Ver2.6):
1. Use USB cable connect DSO Nano with PC, press and hold down key, switch on power, DSO Nano will display "Device Firmware Upgrade V3.22A. Please copy Hex or Bin file to the DFU virtual USB disk". Wait till PC detects DFU virtual USB disk.
2. Download the DSO Nano firmware, copy both of hex files into DFU virtual USB disk(e.g"201AP263.hex"."LIB_A227.hex"). Wait till it change to "LIB_A227.err" and "201AP263.rdy".
3. Shut down and reactivate power to use new firmware.
Please note different device of Dfu corresponse different firmware , please download corresponsing firmware of your device in Resourses."
This is simply describing the general method of upgrading firmware by dragging and dropping hex files without telling you which hex files you need.
--Further down on the Wiki page, under resources it lists this, with a link:

BenF Firmware v3.64 Thank Benf for sharing this great firmware."
When you follow the link, it downloads the file "DSO_BenF_Firmware_v3.64.zip." When you unzip it, there are two .dfu files in it. But you can't copy the .dfu files to the Nano; it gives you an error. So I did not get that to work.
--The next entry on the Wiki page is:
"Firmware(.hex files) for DSO Nano of DFU Ver3.22
DSO Nano Official Firmware App2.6
BenF Firmware v3.64 Thank Benf for sharing this great firmware and Alf arranging it to work with DFU Ver3.22"
When you follow this link, it downloads the file "BenF364_LIB353.zip." When you unzip it, there are two .hex files in it, v353_lib.hex and v364_app.hex. But when I copied them to the Nano and rebooted, the Nano hung up at the startup screen and never got past it. So I did not get that to work.
On the seeedstudio forum, I found reference to using "BENF_P2[BenF_3.64APP_3.53LIB_patched_v2 For Newer LCD].hex." Search for it with google; you'll find it. I downloaded it, loaded it onto the Nano by copying it to the virtual drive, and rebooted. When the Nano came up, it reported:
lib ver 3.53
APP ver 3.64 V1
"system initializing... please wait..."
It also showed large blue lettering saying "BenF."
Yes! Finally! But then it sat there forever. I thought it had failed. But when I shut off the Nano after 10 minutes and turned it back on, it came up with the new BenF firmware installed.
At first glance, the user interface looked almost exactly the same as the original firmware (the look and feel is very similar, with options along the right side), but it is a bit simpler and a bit easier to use and thus IS worth doing. You do, however, still need to understand the basics of using an oscilloscope.
With it working, I was able to easily look at the square wave signal on a BMW wheel speed sensor, which is what I bought it for.
All that aside, it functions, if a bit obscurely. I'm sure if you're an oscope whiz it would be easier. I got it to brush up, explore further, and work on some projects. I wound up ordering the multi-channel unit ... at least if that works ok I'll get better mileage from it.
As titled ... I think I was just unlucky with mine.
Suggest download instructions from the manufacturer. At least easier to read.
7/22/15 SainSmart really does stand behind what they sell. I had a small problem with this and they quickly and totally made it right. 6 star support and service!!!
All in all, I'm happy with the scope. I just wish it had come with the BenF software in the first place!
