As others have pointed out, this is intended for use with a 5v Arduino or other MCU. I'm using a 3v3 MCU and don't have a 5v rail on my board. So, to use this part with a 3v3 supply, modify the board as such: Desolder and remove the AMS1117 chip (the only SOT-223 package on the board) and bridge pins 2 and 3. Supplying the board with 3v3 via the VCC pin will now power the microSD card and U1. BTW, U1 is a 74HC125 derivative used to buffer the four signals (MOSI, MISO, SCK, and SS) between 3v3 and 5v0. It works well for both 3v3 and 5v0 on the external interface.
Now that I'm not such a newbie to Arduino programming, this little unit is very nice! I'm going to leave my three stars because I still think there should be a little more customer service on the front end of SainSmart's products, however, the device itself is fine.
