As someone who has returned to the academy after many years in the corporate world, I have been startled at our contemporary ignorance of the Anglo-Saxon tradition. One of the many charms of St. Aldhelm’s Riddles is that it helps recreate this world, so unlike our own, and yet so influential to what our culture and literature has become.

A.M. Juster has done more than just translate medieval riddles in this fascinating book—although that feat, by itself, would be sufficient. He has put them into English rhyme with a poet’s skill and given his readers a fascinating, accessible glimpse into a long-vanished way of life. And his extremely readable footnotes are both erudite and accessible, providing further insight into that world.
