Piano Roll of Two Musical Greats Played Back On a Modern Grand Piano

This budget CD is a very pleasant surprise, bringing us personal recordings of two important artists of a bygone era, made by using modern recording techniques to capture the sound of piano rolls played on an excellent modern grand piano. Saint-Saëns was a towering musical talent of the 19th and early 20th centuries, a child prodigy compared favorably to Mozart and an adult master of the piano and organ, as well as an extremely accomplished composer and conductor. Although his piano compositions featured here are mostly small pieces of no great impact, they do impress us with the enormous technical facility he possessed: very clean and rapid finger work, an excellent left hand, and full control of the music. Of the six pieces, the final Impromptu in F-Sharp Minor is the most impressive, and it suggests familiarity with.the works of Chopin. Although Saint-Saëns is today remembered mainly as a composer (of such popular works as Carnival of the Animals, Samson and Delilah, Havanaise, Danse Macabre, the 5 piano concertos, and the Third "Organ" Symphony), Josef Hofmann is primarily known as a singularly gifted pianist. The five of his original compositions offered here reveal a very talented and versatile composer as well as a great master performer. The Sanctuary is rich in color and mood, suggestive of the impressionist composers in its effect. Kaleidoscope is a similarly colorful and varied piece rich musical imagination. The Nocturne and the Berceuse again point to familiarity with Chopin, though they are quite different from the latter's works in compositional style. (Hofmann played a good deal of Chopin's music in his recitals and recordings.) A hugely versatile genius, Hofmann was a multiply patented inventor (e.g., the windshield wiper), as well a musician with remarkably keen hearing, able to identify any note combination played on the piano, and a near-photographic memory for music. I believe the Saint-Saëns pieces came from Welte-Mignon piano rolls; the Hofmann pieces may have come from Aeolian Duo-Art rolls, though Hofmann made rolls for more than one company.

Although the playing time of this CD is under 40 minutes, it is still an outstanding value and an uniquely welcome sample of the piano-playing and compositional artistry of two musical greats. In modern high fidelity stereo sound, it should appeal to most any lover of piano music and appreciator of great musical accomplishment. The liner notes focus mainly upon the artists' lives, but they are both revealing and very helpful in spite of not telling us anything about the piano roll origins of the recordings.

Music is wonderful....misleading and terrible liner notes

These performances are from piano rolls...although you wouldn't know it from anywhere on the title or literature included with the CD.

Not that I'm against piano rolls, I like hearing Saint-Saens playing in a crisp clear fashion. The Hofmann selections are also wonderful, but I believe also available elsewhere, such as on the Nimbus series featuring piano rolls.

I wouldn't pay the high price listed here...apparently it's out of print. I believe I found it used for a reasonable price.

To sum up: piano roll performances, sound great, wonderful historical documents, don't pay too much though because you can probably find these performances elsewhere.

Very low Price but great recodrding!

Good Cd for a very low price. Although Laserlight is not comparable to Grammophone, Decca,RCA or Phlips one gets a good set of recordings. The sound was excellently captured. With the composers playing it themselves, this is a steal and defenitely should not be overlooked.
