About the Author
Gil McDonald is a British writer, originally from Liverpool, with two other Westerns published by Robert Hale of London, under the author name of Amos Carr. This will be her first to be published by Prairie Rose Publications. She has completed two Contemporary Romances (one is with an agent at present) and is working on a Teen Fantasy trilogy. She also has two more Westerns started, and after requests from readers, is thinking of a follow up to one of the Hale books.

After losing his horse and sustaining a number of injuries while pursuing a band of outlaws, Vance goes to a local horse dealer for a new ride. That is when he notices the numerous cuts and bruises on the woman and her sibling. Intrigued and saddened by the overt abuse, he makes a life-changing decision to spirit those two innocents away from the men who are holding them virtually captive.
What follows is a novel of love and sacrifice...
Positives- This is a fast mover. It's obvious this author knows her horseflesh, and the western genre.
Negatives- Although I thought this book was well-written and edited there were a couple of stylistic bugs (IMO). Too many adverbs in the beginning made me stumble, but also seemed to fade away as the plot-line unfolded.
Also, the author used the term "bloody" at least twice. Now, I know that that exclamation might have been used at random by any number of people in the old west- but that is more of a UK expression that slipped into the American Western dialogue. That should have been edited out in favor of something more Yank...
All in all, a fine read. 4 stars!
His conscience won't let him leave them there to be continually abused. He plans their escape.
This was an excellent story. It had tenderness, toughness and romance. My only criticism is it could do with a little more editing. I give this book 4 1/2* and recommend it to all lovers of Romance or Westerns.
This story is mainly told through Vance's POV, and he is one heckuva hero. The strong, silent type, Vance endears himself to the reader from the first page. He has a strong set of morals and I liked how he thinks matters through before jumping into a difficult situation and bringing more harm than good. Molly is a sweetheart of a heroine. She's accepted her lot in life, bearing the brunt of her husband's hand to shield her brother. When Vance presents himself as the only chance at freedom for herself and her brother, her emotional faith is as strong as her physical strength, bringing to climax justice being served while tears fill the eyes.
Ms. McDonald's voice is refreshing. Her narrative urges the reader to keep reading, and her characters are those you'll remember long after you've finished the book. I look forward to reading more of Ms. McDonald's work.
