Saints to Lean On: Spiritual Companions for Illness and Disability Paperback – August 30, 2006

4.5 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

Like Joseph Bernardin, people with illness or disability first need to resolve the ever-important 'Why?' question. Like Julian of Norwich, they need to find the spiritual meaning in living with illness. Also, they need to know the profound spiritual power of the redemptive aspect of suffering as Caryll Houselander so often stressed.
—from the Introduction

Come find comfort in your time of need with 11 inspiring and faith-filled spiritual companions. These holy men and women, each from a different background and time period, suffered illness or disability, and through prayer found acceptance, strength and hope. Author Janice McGrane gives a biographical sketch of each spiritual companion and then shares how each companion faced adversity in physical, mental and emotional pain.

As you journey through your own pain—or walk a difficult path with a loved one—you will want to look to these spiritual companions and their stories to find your own meaning in suffering.

A wise, comforting and well-written book. The author presents enough biographical information to familiarize the reader with the "saints", but not so much that one becomes disinterested. But the real heart of the book is the spiritual wisdom, solace and strength given through the examples of the various lives portrayed.
At first I was disappointed that some of the people chosen were obscure, modern and unknown to me (as opposed to those who were more familiar such as Saint Ignatius and Julian of Norwich). But I found all them to be equally well-chosen; inspiring examples of living with faith, courage and closeness to God in spite of -- and even because of -- chronic illness and disability.
I'm not Catholic. Although the book is written by a Catholic and, presumably, primarily for Catholics, I found it accessible and spiritually uplifting. Ms. McGrane has done a much-needed service for those of us living with illness and disability. I related; I underlined; I wept. This is an excellent book, one that will itself become a spiritual companion for me on my journey.

SAINTS TO LEAN ON opened my eyes about goodness prevailing in the midst of unavoidable suffering. It illustrates the fountains of God's grace nourishing the soul to produce blessings of joy and peace in many circumstances of ill health. These individuals' spirits were in no way confined by physical disability but gave them a strengthening compassion that was miraculous in their lives and ones touched by their example. I recommend these stories for an uplifting change in attitude towards debilitating illness.

I was pleased with the information that was in the book. Sometimes people who are struggling with an illness or just suffering in general find it helpful to know that others have somehow turned their pain and suffering into great holiness. I would like to have found more situations included.

"Saints to Lean on" has brought me great comfort and will continue to do so. I first turned to it for Chapter 4, "Saint Ignatius Loyola, Our Companion in Temporary Disability." The wisdom helped me through an operation and recovery. I then assumed caregiving duties for my elderly father, and turned to Chapter 3: "Saint Catherine of Genoa, Our Companion in Caregiving." I love reading about how saints coped with issues I face today. These saints are models whose experiences help me try to follow Christ's path. I also feel a renewed sense of solidarity with the communion of saints when I read this book. You'll find strength and solidarity in these pages.

Saints to Lean On by Janice McGrane, S.S.J. provides a compelling look at eleven different "spiritual companions". Each biographical vignette looks at a member of the "communion of saints" who have gone before us on their own paths, which included pain and suffering. In her introductory comments, McGrane rightly discusses the line between praying "to" saints and praying "with" them. Not all of the eleven have been formally canonized, but each provides a role model of strength and courage in facing adversity. While the book is addressed towards those suffering illness and disability, I found it an uplifting resource for taking on any adversity in life. I was particularly moved by the chapters on St. Therese of Lisieux and Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha.

I bought this book even though I do not have a disability. I was drawn to it because I look to the saints for examples and advice. I try to "prepare myself" for any struggles that may come my way. I am already familiar with many of the saints, but this book includes many saintly and blessed people I had not heard of--so I learned something new. I recently met the author (Janice McGrane). She is a wonderful storyteller and a very humble and kind individual. She knows from first-hand experience that disabilities can bring us closer to God if we allow ourselves to place "radical trust" in Him. The saints are our friends who who are eager to help us and comfort us if we just reach out to them.
