When we got the pens in the mail (2 days later, thanks Prime!) we were anxious to try them. There are many different shades of colors in this set, several purples, reds, yellows, blues, browns, and even grays and black. The tips of the pens are very soft, sharp pointed, nylon. These aren't like a felt or gel roller pen; you don't "color" like you would with the pens or pencils by making repetitive back and forth motions. The soft tip encourages more of a painting-type stroke with longer, smoother, sweeping type movements. With practice, sweeping through a curved area becomes a single fluid movement with the tip precisely on the edge of the line desired. The ink flows off the tip very easily and smoothly, but the darkest colors seem to bleed a little more than the medium and lighter colors. It takes a little bit to get the hang of using them, but once you do it is actually much easier and a LOT less work to color/paint areas than it is with a pen or pencil. We really, really, REALLY dig these pens!
The "brush" part of the pen does give a paint brush like effect, though the tips are a bit stiff, I would like to see them be a bit more flexible tips, perhaps it will loosen up with use.
I would recommend getting a piece of white paper and testing out the colors first, the caps give you an idea but they are not accurate to the colors.
I would also recommend either getting the full set of colors (this only has half of the colors available) or do what I did, get this set, the gray set and be sure to get the colorless blenders as well.
Bottom line, they work for me, I'd love to have a set of Copics, but refuse to pay out that kind of $$$ just to play, you can get a similar effect with these, not exactly like the high end markers, but much better than the cheap markers for kids.
I love these for this purpose and this morning I ordered the larger colored set. The tips are small and tapered to a point, the brush tip is not as soft as other brands I have tried and these give me better control as I color the tiny details in pattern designs, plus better full coverage of each tiny detail.
The colors surprised me a little with the combination of both warm and cool colors and the warm gray with an almost brownish tint, and the dark cool gray having almost a greenish tint. But each color is distinct and using them all together creates an interesting and unique design pattern that I love. If you are looking for pure silvers and pure grays for another application these might not be what you are looking for. I am adding pictures to help you decide if these are just right for you.
These markers are odorless, transparent, blendable, and use a water based ink so they have less bleed through than alcohol based markers.
The colors lay down with full , smooth coverage and in the coloring book I am adding there was no feathering outside the drawn line as I colored. This coloring book has a light weight paper and Mark it markers and sharpies immediately spread as I tried to color, but not these KOI brush pens.
Each marker has the color listed on the barrel and these six markers include:
Light Cool Gray, Cool Gray, Dark Cool Gray, Light warm Gray, Warm Gray and Dark Warm Gray.
All in all if you are a colorist looking for more unique colors for coloring tiny details with nice coverage these might be just what you are looking for.
