when salerno went out of business i decided to load up with a case of my favorite butter cookies - bad decision because they were all STALE not fresh like from the grocery store who knows how long they were sitting in the warehouse beware when buying this item
I am writing with a hope, not a criticism. The Salerno Butter Cookies I remember were originally made in the Chicago area in Niles, IL in their plant on Caldwell. I am not sure they make them anymore.
Recently I did buy a box of them at my local foodstore in Norridge. Nothing like they used to be when I heard this jingle many, MANY years ago:
Mommy? --What is it, dear? Mommy, I want a Salerno butter cookie! --I heard you, dear, Salerno cookie coming right up.
You can lookie, lookie, lookie But you'll never find a cookie With a better butter batter than Salerno. [by Nabisco!] -30-
If the manufacturer will kindly look up the old recipe, take out the High Fructose Corn Syrup and start doing it right, this product would shine again.
Hello, My name is Michael and I work at the Niles Historical Society. We recently became the recipient of most the items from the Niles Bakery, Salerno.
The Grandson and Grandmother brought in a ton of memorabilia of the Salerno(Butter)Cookie company that was on Caldwell, in Niles. It has long since been sold, and the memorabilia came from the Uncle who recently passed on,and who never married.
The Salerno - Magowan Cookie company, as it was first known, was famous for the EQUIPMENT Mr. Salerno made to create the cookies. We have a multitude of patents on files for making Windmills, Butter Cookies, and even a few machine patents that were very old and were granted by the Third Reich of Germany (Complete with swastika!)
Later on Mr. Salerno was persuaded to stick with the cookies and crackers. Many a morning as I was growing up in Niles I would smell the baking of the cookies just a few miles away! Yummy!
If you can get your hands on the cookie, please be advised that it is nothing like the original. At all. Salerno Cookie company is gone forever. If you remember the taste and quality cherish the memory!

No Stars!!! Someone had the "Bright Idea" to Change the Recipe and Still call them Salerno Butter Cookies.I BEG to DIFFER!!!!
I just purchased a box at the local grocery store. I thought they were awesome. At our house, the kids gobbled them up fast. They may not be exactly the same as before, but still pretty awesome.

I have the fondest memories of Salerno cookies growing up near O'Hare Airport in the 70's and 80's...along with the Maurice Lenell line(my favorite, the pinwheel)and I have to say how very disappointed I was when I bought a box from Jewel the other day. These cookies are not even remotely close to what I remember them being and at first thought maybe it was just my old memories competing, but my husband tried them too and said the same thing! They're smaller, a bit thicker, harder/crunchier and not nearly as buttery and smooth as they used to be. I don't know what the hell happened or why the formula has changed (someone in an earlier review mentioned high fructose corn syrup) but it's really disappointing and a shame that a Chicago classic has been reduced to mediocrity. Praying that whoever does read this actually does something about it...because I sure know I won't ever be buying these again!
