Salinger is a documentary behind one of the most famous writers in American literature, and what's famous about him is that he wrote one book and then disappeared. So, for Salinger that's what the music accompanies. It sets up a road of discovery, intrigue and mystery yet still paints the portrait of a man. Balfe's score almost plays out like a political thriller. Lots of wonderful textures and melodies build an encapsulating wall around you that immerse you with this fascinating figure. The score has everything from piano, strings, synths and guitar. It all feels as if it's one cohesive piece though despite the variable sounds used. The music sparks your curiosity and opens up some aspects of fascination by putting you in the driver's seat. You're on the quest for knowledge just like the filmmakers are, and Balfe's rich score makes you feel as if you're leading this quest.
Most documentary scores stay in the back and accompany the material lightly never trying to overshadow. Balfe's score is definitely a driving force here as the music propels the story and the information. The score isn't afraid to take charge, and that makes it a wonderfully engaging listen. The tracks build in strong narrative fashion, they infuse emotion and in the end everything comes to a satisfying conclusion. Salinger is a richly detailed score that isn't your typical doc soundtrack.
