Top customer reviews
Before these boots, I was wearing full-leather hiking boots. I still have my Han Wag full-leather boots, and before that I went through two pairs of Scarpas and a pair of Lowas. All those were excellent boots and the Han Wags still are. But these Salomon boots which are the subject of this review are lighter, breathable, and far more comfortable on my feet. These are almost as comfortable as my Inov8 trail runners, while offering me almost as much support as the Scarpas and the Han Wags. These are now my preferred hiking boot anywhere I need more support than the trail runners give.
The only drawbacks of the Salomons is that being lighter and more flexible, they do not accept crampons, so I still need to wear the Han Wags when hiking on glacier with crampons, and I think the Han Wags are warmer for hiking in snow. I give these a solid 5 stars and recommend them for light-duty hiking on any terrain other than snow or ice, where heavier or stiffer boots are needed. Note that I never carry a full backpack (I do day hikes only) so I don't know, but I'd imagine that you'd want a heavier boot if you're carrying a heavy pack.
Though we're currently using the boot for day hikes, I am fairly confident that it would suit just fine for a 2-3 day backpacking trip, depending on the weight of your pack.
I also found the arch high in the break in period. Once I put a 30 pound pack on me (I weigh 175) the shoes arches were not noticed at all and supported me the way they should.
On the hike (the first 40 of the AT - the Approach to Neels Gap) we encountered tons of rock, uphill, downhill and water and never had an issue. My feet would sweat and the ventilation work great for these.
I was worried about new shoes for a hike, but these work flawlessly!
