I had a pair of Nike Flex prior to the Sense Mantra, Flex seems to have more aggressive lugs, and is less slippery on wet rocks. I slipped on the Mantra crossing creeks once on each shoe on my 1st trail run. It drys fast though. The plate, or the profeel film is just right, protects from rocky trails, but give me a good feel of the trail. The 6 mm drop is great for the bare foot feel, but the out sole just enough cushioning. but I have very sensitive feet, I will try my sport insert on my next run.
Aside from a bit more slippery on wet rocks, the other big draw back...... is the lug.... oh boy!
My very first run on this shoes was a rubber track for about 3 mils just to get use to the shoes and to break it in, then I did two 5.5 miles trailing running, from 750m(my casio patherfinder watch captures altitude in meters, go figer) ran down hill to 550m, then climb to 860m and back to the starting point in a circle trail. At the end of my second trail run, I found 3 lugs on my left shoe had chipped...... I will upload pictures if possible. I am disappointed because from some reviews it said the out sole was durable and was holding on well. ... not in my case.
I hope I can put more mileage on the Mantra before shopping for another pair of something else.
I prefer a wide shoe. These are average width. They do have some give in them though to allow for stretch.
The tongue on this version should probably be a bit longer because the top lace, when tightened, clamps down on access to the laces pouch (but can still be accessed - just not as simple as XT Wings).
There's no arguing with US$47 (June 26).
Lastly. Amazed by the delivery on this. Purchased on a Thursday. Delivered to front door in Sydney on following Tuesday (9 days prior to estimate. Normal delivery was selected).
In giving the Sense Mantra a try I was impressed at the build quality as well as the fit of the shoe.
For a road shoe, it would fit a bit tight around the widest part of my forefoot, but this is the exact fit that I want and need in a trail shoe for stability.
The lacing system is unique and I like having a pocket for the excess lace. (Also works very well for a house or car key)
I love the shoes and would recommend them to anyone.
Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra 2 - 11.5
Salomon Mission XR - 12
Nike Fly Series - 12
North Face Shoes - 12
Merrell - 11.5
So with that said, I ordered the Sense Mantras in size 11.5. They were still too big. Returned them for free (thanks Amazon!) and picked up an 11 which fits perfectly. I have to say, I don't own a single other pair of shoes that is size 11. I'm not sure what Salomon did here, but the sizing is off. Hope this helps someone get the correct size on the first attempt.
P.S. This is a narrower shoe, but I don't have a wide foot so it feels great to me. Sort of similar to the width of my XA Pro 3D Ultras. The Mission XRs are definitely wider...probably a bit too wide for my foot.
Will do a follow-up based on how they break-in (Salomons are stiff out of the box).
I would have tried to complain to Salomon but they were only $75 so it wasn't really worth it.
At 6mm This is the lowest drop from heel to toe that I have ever run in. I am working on my forefoot mid foot technique and this shoe fits in nicely. The sole has alternate teeth design that really offers grip on the trail.
I would give it 5 stars, but it could be softer. I am not a minimalist. The mantra is pretty soft, but could be softer.
