“Salty Dog Rag” brings together some of my favorite musical styles — ragtime blues, bluegrass, old ballads, and one original song.
“Pal of Mine” is derived from the work of early blues artist Blind Willie McTell. “I’ve Been All Around This World” may have been written by Grandpa Jones, who recorded it in 1946. “Ants in My Pants” comes from Bo Carter, known for his comic blues lyrics.
“Salty Dog Rag” lyrics are by John Gordy and Edward Crowe. “Roll On John” is a traditional song, also sometimes sung as “Roll On Buddy.” “Maid on the Shore” is a seafaring ballad. “New River Train” was claimed by the Ward family of Galax as part of their repertoire in 1895.
“This Ain’t No Place for Me” was recorded by Jim Jackson in 1928. “Mount & Go” is a Celtic ballad. “This Partying Life” is an original composition.
Dean Rathje: vocals, guitars, banjo, mandolin, dobro, bass.
