As a side note, I would like to say that this author's action sequences and fight scenes are the best I've read, particularly the toe to toe brawls. Some of my favorite mainstream authors still muddle this in small degrees but in Salvation each move is written with such clarity that I see it as a movie in my head and don't have to stop to think or go back to understand exactly what is happening. A person that doesn't know anything about fighting will be able to clearly see what the characters are doing and a person with any sort of martial training will appreciate the concise detail.
A.M.C takes on some typical conflicts within the pages. Man against himself - very well done as men struggle to overcome their own fears, anger and personal agendas for a greater good. Man against man - Men are placed in the same confines on a single mission that in a normal day's work would never co-exist. The typical conflicts of such a tight and sudden enmeshment were well written. Man against nature - Boy nature packed quite the punch. And of course, man against extra-terrestrial. I loved watching these interweave as the story played out.
The only thing I found disturbing or distracting about this novel is that all the conversations were in italics. I could only read for short periods of time due to the cognitive dissonance this created though it got better as I made my way through the novel.
I also found it interesting that there were few women. Man is in trouble if there aren't a few more women left on Earth. Where were the women marines?
]This book is right up the alley of any science fiction reader. It’s the story of Alex, a young teenage boy, that loses his family and home when evil aliens attack earth. It’s also the story of his father Max, though he dies early on in the book.
The relationship between father and son is weaved into the story. After the attack the evil aliens leave, but earth is a violent hellhole. Ten years go by and finally Alex is recruited for a special operation to take the fight to the alien home planet before they return. I won’t tell you what happens next, except to be sure there are a lot of twists in the plot from here.
This book is a hefty 725 pages and I was astonished at the amount of labor that went into creating this masterpiece. The worlds that the writer created are spectacular and the attention given to minute details. A couple of times I felt like I was watching a movie rather than reading. I could already imagine the actors I would choose for the roles. The characters are authentic though you often despise them or are repulsed by them.
Alex on the other hand develops into a remarkable young man that keeps you rooted to your seat hoping that he would overcome every obstacle.
There is a fair amount of action and violence in the book, so beware if you don’t have the stomach for it. I would definitely recommend having a look at this book.
Excitement, violence, gore are all in abundance, but liberally sprinkled with an exploration of human nature - the good and the bad.
A.M.C. has written a book with all the qualities needed for it to become a classic of our time.
Due to the language and violence, I wouldn't recommend this book for younger readers, or for those who are squeamish! For anyone else, this should go on your "MUST READ" list right now!!
All the battle scenes were written very good, I could see them perfectly in my head. The ending left me wanting more, so I really hope there will be sequel!
