Editorial Reviews

As many readers may know, Sam and Max was originally a comic book series which started in the late 1980's, and later gained popularity when an official game was released in 1993. Quirky is an understatement when describing the Sam and Max franchise and the music found on this album, but if I had to use one word to sway readers to listen to this score, it'd be as follows: jazz. Composer Jared Emerson-Johnson has done a wonderful job creating a score centered on classic jazz with several live players to bring a real jazz experience to listeners. I think the whimsical nature of the genre is well suited to the Sam and Max universe, which approaches American popular culture with a level of irreverence. There are arrangements of American folk classics like I've Been Working on the Railroad and others, as well as vocal tracks with bizarre lyrics. Sam and Max Season One Soundtrack is a new, exciting way to experience game music. We've seen orchestral scores time and time again, but rarely do we get to experience quality classic jazz with live players in a video game. From the sleek cardboard album casing with cool cover art to the catchy, fun, and downright wacky music, this album has more polish than many scores for blockbuster titles. --Music4Games.net

Composer Jared Emerson-Johnson's score is grounded in a smooth, film noir-style jazz, but easily branches off into other styles at a moment's notice to follow the wacky settings and characters in the games. Although jazz maintains the continuity, diverse musical styles like a song-and-dance Charleston number, faux Philip Glass, an ode to Nina Rota's music from the Godfather, and even some inspired retro 8-bit game music have come into play. One of the best features of this soundtrack is that it features live performances. This always makes a huge difference - especially in jazz where synthesized work simply can't compare to the feeling and nuance real musicians bring to the recording. The commercial release will be a pretty all-inclusive set for the season, with both CDs filled almost to capacity. All of the in-game loops will be included in their entireties with their respective variations, and a substantial amount of the cutscene music will be included as well. Each disc will feature essentially complete musical suites from three episodes, presented in as chronological an order as possible. --IGN.com
